Bag days will be Aug. 31 and Sept. 1. The shop will be closed on Sept. 3, 4, and 5, and will re-open on Sept. 6 for both selling and receiving during regular hours, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Country dancers welcome new members The North Jersey English Country Dancers welcome newcomers to the Aug. 28 Sunday afternoon dance, which will be held at the Unitarian Society of Ridgewood, 113 Cottage Place in Ridgewood. All dances are taught and prompted, and the music is live. Come with or without a partner. Learn about college application process West Bergen Mental Healthcare invites high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors with Asperger’s syndrome, NVLD, HFA, and PDD-NOAS to participate in a series of four college workshops that will cover school selection, the application process, and admissions interviews. Workshops will be held at 120 Chestnut Street in Ridgewood on Mondays from 5 to 6:30 p.m. beginning Oct. 17. The four workshops will offer important criteria for the student to consider (proximity to home, commuting vs. campus housing, college size, two-year vs. four-year colleges, etc.); diagnostic disclosure – pros and cons; special services; how to self advocate; selecting a major; transferring options; and hands on experience in filling out the application, requesting letters of recommendation, and a mock admissions interview. Lifeguard instruction classes set YWCA Bergen County will offer American Red Cross Lifeguard Training from Sept. 13 through Oct. 20. This course prepares students with the CPR, first aid, and lifeguard techniques necessary for employment as a professional lifeguard. Participants must be at least 15 years of age, and must take and pass a swim test, which will be held on Sept. 7 at 7 p.m. and Sept. 10 at 10 a.m. A $10 swim test fee is due at registration. Classes will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 9:30 p.m. at 112 Oak Street in Ridgewood. The course fee is $370. YWCA Bergen County offers a variety of American Red Cross certified programs throughout the year, includ- ing swimming lessons for individuals who are age six through adult. Choral society holds auditions The New Jersey Choral Society is seeking experienced singers to audition for the 2011-12 season. NJCS is a mixed choir of about 90 singers based in northern Bergen County. Rehearsals are held Tuesday evenings in Ramsey. The 2011-12 season promises many exciting opportunities, including performances of Vaughan Williams’ “A Sea Symphony” and a tour of London, England next summer. Auditions are scheduled for Tuesdays, Sept. 13 and 20 and prospective singers need to be able to sight-read and have a love of all musical styles, from classical to Broadway. DACKKs hosts tennis benefit The DACKKs Group for Supportive Housing Development will host a Tennis Clinic and Day of Events fundraiser on Monday, Sept. 12 at the Englewood Field Club, 341 Engle Street in Englewood. (Rain date: Sept. 19.) The day will begin at 8:30 a.m. with registration and will continue with the tennis clinic until the noon luncheon, which will be held courtside. The event will feature an auction, special contests and fundraisers, vendor tables, prizes, and more. The cost is $75 per person, and all white dress is required. The event is being sponsored by Ro’s Round Robins Tennis and proceeds will benefit the efforts of the DACKKs Group. The DACKKs Group for Supportive Housing Development is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization. Now in its second decade, the DACKKs Group has provided safe, decent, and affordable permanent and supportive housing to 27 homeless adults – many of whom are disabled – and children in scattered site housing throughout Bergen County.
