Page 20 THE VILLADOM TIMES I, II, III & IV • August 17, 2011 DVD releases (continued from Restaurant page) extras. “The Big Lebowski” (Universal Home Entertainment) is Joel and Ethan Coen’s comedy crime caper film inspired by Raymond Chandler and countless films noires. The plot deals with a case of mistaken identity complicated by extortion, double-crosses, deception, embezzlement, sex, and marijuana. In 1991 Los Angeles, Jeff “The Dude” Lebowski (Jeff Bridges) enjoys his laidback, responsibility-free lifestyle. He enjoys hanging out with bowling buddies Walter Sobchak (John Goodman) and mild-mannered ex-surfer Donny (Steve Buscemi). The weirdness kicks in when two goons break in on The Dude and rough him up because they mistake him for another Jeff Lebowski. “The Big Lebowski” is a wonderful showcase for Bridges, who turns in a funny performance as the zonedout Dude. Though other directors have attempted to portray this type of character, none have succeeded as well as the Coens. The Dude has had a wild past, but now prefers to ebb along, ambitionless, content to smoke joints, bother no one, and hang out with his buddies. It’s quite a shock to the Dude when he is beaten for reasons he can’t fathom. Juxtaposing a mellow stoner with the violent world of thugs, hit men, and real danger provides many genuinely funny, unexpected scenes. The script is espe- cially intriguing as subplots abound and come together in the end. Also starring are Julianne Moore, John Turturro, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and David Huddleston. Blu-ray bonus features include a look at “The Big Lebowski” 10 years later, a making-of featurette, a Jeff Bridges photo book, a close-up look at the film’s surreal dream sequences, a digital copy, and a 28-page hardcover book with photos, behind-the-scenes information, and cast biographies. “Gone” (A&E Home Entertainment) is a Lifetime movie in which Amy (Molly Parker) discovers her nineyear-old daughter Emily has been kidnapped. A phone call instructs her to kill a recently admitted patient in her hospital if she wants to see her daughter again. With a scarred background of her own, Amy decides to disregard the kidnappers’ demands and find Emily herself. As she races to rescue her child, she uncovers a larger plot that involves top city officials and corrupt cops who will stop at nothing to see that she and her family are destroyed. Hall as the title character, who goes from a happily married husband to a guilt-ridden single dad struggling to atone for the death of his wife. When his secret is discovered by a woman seeking revenge against those who brutalized her, he finds a kindred spirit who may finally save -- or destroy -- him. Julia Stiles joins the cast for the fifth season. Twelve episodes and interviews with cast members are included.
