Performing at this concert will be synagogue members Dr. Tamara Reps Freeman, Artie Bressler, Irene Bressler, and Richard Schnaittacher. They will be playing works by Henry Purcell, Gabriel Faure, Pietro Mascagni, C. SaintSaens, and E. Poldini. The program will begin at 7 p.m. with a reception and light refreshments, followed by the performance. Attendees will celebrate Kabbalat Shabbat in the sanctuary at 8:30 p.m. Babysitting will be available. Admission is free, but voluntary donations of any amount will be appreciated to support music at Temple Israel. Dr. Freeman, violinist, violist, music educator, and resident of Saddle River, received her doctor of musical arts degree, summa cum laude, from Rutgers University. Her dissertation, “Using Holocaust Music to Encourage Racial Respect: An Interdisciplinary Curriculum for Grade K-12,” is our country’s first Holocaust music curriculum. Since 1982, Freeman has been an instrumental music teacher and conductor in the Ridgewood Public Schools. She frequently performs Holocaust music recitals on her 1935 Joseph Bausch viola, a relic of the Holocaust. Freeman plays the violin and viola in the Adelphi Chamber Ensemble and Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra. He has worked with major artists and producers including The O’Jays, Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt, John Hammond, Milt Jackson, The Four Tops, and many others. He composed the score of the new musical comedy, “Meester Amerika,” which had its world premiere at the Becton Theatre at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck. The Newark Star-Ledger gave Bressler and his lyricist, Michael Colby, a “New Jersey” Tony for best score. Earlier in his career, Bressler wrote the music for the Pulitzer Prize-winning play “Crimes of (continued on page 23) Changes to contracted construction on three Ridgewood schools have added more than $180,000 to the cost of the renovation and expansion work at Hawes School, Ridge School, and Benjamin Franklin Middle School. The change orders, which were approved at the most recent meeting of the Ridgewood Board of Education, cover unanticipated construction needs at the three schools and bring the total contract amounts to $4,196,211 for the Hawes School, $555,845 for the Benjamin Franklin Middle School, and $3,209,217 for Ridge School. Change orders for the Hawes School include $7,155 to modify the curbs around the grounds, $17,611 to install additional casework and sinks in several rooms, $6,493 to Change orders add $180,000 to costs replace sidewalk and curbs around the playground, $7,684 to replace exit signs and emergency lights in the existing buildings, $54,159 to remove and dispose of excess contaminated soil, $4282 to remove hardware at an exterior door to accommodate electronic access, and $8,456 to supply and install window shades in the existing building to match those of the addition. The total for change orders to the Hawes School is $105,840.
