Under a new partnership that brings together YMCAs in New Jersey under a unified reciprocity plan, a total of 31 participating Ys with 49 branches have instituted this cooperative program, called “My Y is Every Y.” A list of participating Ys is available at www.ridgewoodymca. org, or by calling (201) 444-5600. The unified reciprocity plan is being offered in addition to the national AWAY (Always Welcome at YMCAs) program, which allows access to YMCAs nationwide for a nominal fee. Similar programs are in place in other regions of the Northeast, including Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Maine. Woman’s Club hosts Summer Membership Social The Woman’s Club of Ridgewood will host a Membership Summer Social on Thursday, Aug. 25. The event has been scheduled from 7:30 to 10 p.m. at the clubhouse at 215 West Ridgewood Avenue in Ridgewood. Light fare and beverages will be served. Area women are invited to learn about the club’s mission and events, and to meet club members. The Woman’s Club is a 501c3 organization for women who are at least 18 years of age. The club hosts monthly luncheons/ socials, sponsors Meals on Wheels, raises money for local charities, hosts the annual House Tour and Children’s Theater, sponsors Social Service families’ holiday wish lists, and more. Anyone who can not attend the August event is asked to attend the Fall Coffee planned for Sept. 16 at 9:30 a.m. Opera company performs free concert The Ridgewood Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company, in conjunction with the Ridgewood Public Library and the Kasshau Shell Committee, will present a concert featuring the music from “HMS Pinafore” on Tuesday, Aug. 9. This program will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the library auditorium at 125 North Maple Avenue. Admission is free. The Ridgewood G&S Opera Company recently presented “HMS Pinafore” as a fully-staged production at an International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, where -- once again -- the company became award winners. The Ridgewood G&S Opera Company offers two fully-staged productions each year. In fall 2012, the company will celebrate its 75th Anniversary. Students exhibit artwork All students of art classes offered through the Ridgewood Parks and Recreation Department are invited to display their work in a special exhibit, “A Student’s Celebration of Art,” to be held at the Stable Gallery throughout the month of August. Students are asked to share one of two of their favorite pieces. Artwork may be delivered to the Stable, 259 North Maple Avenue in Ridgewood. Artwork should be tagged with name and telephone number. An artists’ reception will be held on Aug. 11 from 4 to 6 p.m. All exhibitors may invite their friends and family. The public is welcome to attend. HILT plans events Domenick Panfile of Dumont will entertain the members of Highlights in Leisure Time on Aug. 11 at 10 a.m. Panfile, who is pursuing a musical career at Montclair University, will perform Broadway show tunes and arias from various operas. He was the recipient of The National Association of Teachers’ first prize for singing during his freshman year at Montclair. Panfile has been performing since he was in the fifth grade. On Aug. 18, HILT will offer a sightseeing and dining cruise at the Jersey Shore. Attendees will enjoy waterfront dining at the Shrimp Box Restaurant in Point Pleasant Beach. After lunch, participants will board the River Belle for a 90-minute narrated cruise along the inland waters of the Manasquan River, Point Pleasant Canal, and Barnegat Bay. Participants may board the bus at the Graydon Pool lot beginning at 10:15 a.m. The bus will depart at 10:30 a.m. and will return at 5 p.m. The cost is $40 for HILT members and $45 for non-members. Free senior transportation available The Village of Ridgewood provides free transportation for Ridgewood senior citizens using an 11 passenger bus on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. This service is good for transportation to and from medical appointments, grocery and mall shopping, and senior activities at the Community Center and library. Irene Bressler studied harp at The Music Academy of the West and the Manhattan School of Music. She studied piano accompaniment at Arizona State University where she also played harp with the Phoenix Symphony. She currently plays harp with the Ridgewood Symphony Orchestra, the Ridgewood Concert Band, the Adelphi Chamber Orchestra, and the Paramus Community Orchestra. This free lance artist has also played the harp at major New York City hotels for weddings, private parties, and high tea. For Schnaittacher, the viola is not an avocation as much as a serious hobby. He began his private instrumental studies on the viola at the age of 10 with Betty Lefferts in Roslyn, New York. He performed in his youth with the Long Island Youth Symphony and served as its principal violist for two years. During five summers, he attended the Red Fox Music camp near Tanglewood in the Berkshires of Massachusetts, which occasionally was visited by guest artists from the Boston Symphony. From time to time, he continues to take private lessons with Erica Boyd of Leonia. Schnaittacher has occasionally organized concerts by world class musicians from the America Israel Cultural Foundation at Temple Israel and at other venues.
