Social Security office reduces hours Effective Aug. 15, the Social Security office located at 201 Rock Road in Glen Rock will be open to the public Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., a reduction of 30 minutes each weekday. While agency employees will continue to work their regular hours, this shorter public window will allow them to complete face-to-face service with the visiting public without incurring the cost of overtime. Most Social Security services do not require a visit to an office. Those who wish to apply for benefits, sign up for direct deposit, replace a Medicare card, obtain a proof of income letter, or give notice of a change of address or telephone number may do so at www.socialsecurity.gov or by calling the toll-free number, 1-800-772-1213. The hearing impaired may call the TTY number, 1-800-325-0778. Register for 2011 Labor Day Arboretum Run Registration for the 24th Annual Glen Rock Jaycees Labor Day Arboretum Run is now under way. Commission seeks assistance with tree care The Glen Rock Shade Tree Commission is seeking residents’ assistance with the watering of the 80 new trees that were planted along Glen Rock’s streets this spring. With record-breaking heat and very little rainfall, the commission needs the help of borough residents to water and protect this significant investment. Residents are asked to adopt a street tree to ensure the trees are regularly watered through the remainder of the summer. The commission offers the following tips: Trees need 15 to 20 gallons of water per week, especially young trees planted in the past three years. Trees should be watered slowly so the water can penetrate the soil. A mulch donut may be built around the tree’s base to capture and hold water. Don’t waste time watering a tree’s branches and leaves; it’s the tree’s root system that needs the water most. For more information about watering trees or to request a free street tree, contact the Glen Rock Department of Public Works at (201) 670-3980 or publicworks@glenrocknj.net. Movie under the Stars presented The Glen Rock Recreation Department will host its free Movie under the Stars program on Aug. 25, when viewers will watch Zac Efron and Amanda Crew star in the story of a man who finds his way from grief to true love. (Rain date: Aug. 30.) Residents are encouraged to grab a blanket and lawn chairs and head over to Wilde Memorial Park on Maple Avenue. Refreshments will be available. Show time is at dusk; approximately 8:30 p.m.

Neighbors from Barnett Place said a proposed action before the board of adjustment could potentially place a cellular tower 40 feet from the nearest property line, and

they objected to this for aesthetic and safety reasons. “I think it’s unacceptable,” said a neighbor of the main firehouse, where another cell tower had been informally proposed. That proposal, which was made by the council, has been withdrawn due to objections from neighbors. Killion said the information he had received from the Copps was interesting and worthy of consideration. “Residents of Ridgewood, the majority of them, do not want a cell tower,” he said. “We will move cautiously.”
