Art class offered to seniors Artist Harolto Victorino will teach an eight-week art class in watercolors at the Northwest Bergen Regional Senior Center in Midland Park on Fridays at 10:30 a.m. beginning April 29. Harolto believes working in watercolors allows beginners and experienced artists to work side by side. Harolto began exhibiting his artwork in Brazil and then in the United States. His work has been on display at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, and at The Stable, West Side Presbyterian Church, and the Ridgewood Public Library. The center is located at 46-50 Center Street in Midland Park. Volunteers sought for memorial observance American Legion Post 53 of Ridgewood-Ho-Ho-Kus is seeking volunteers to assist in placing American flags at the graves of military veterans on Saturday, May 14. The group will mark over 800 graves. Attendees will meet at 9 a.m. at Valleau Cemetery in Ridgewood. Children are welcome. For more information, call Bob Paoli at (201) 445-1738.
Cut-a-Thon benefit set On May 1, I Love Lucy Salon at 6 Elm Street in Oakland will hold a Cut-a-Thon fundraiser to benefit The Mark Piercy Cancer Fund. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will include a DJ and refreshments. Detective Mark Piercy is a member of the Oakland Police Department and local DARE officer. Chamber Business & Food Expo set The Mahwah Regional Chamber of Commerce, and the Meadowlands Regional and the Hackensack Regional chambers of commerce will host Connections 2011, a Business & Food Expo, on Thursday, May 12. The event will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Meadowlands Exposition Center, 355 Plaza Drive in Secaucus. Connections 2011 will feature exhibits from companies in food service, hospitality, technology, financial services, wellness, and many other local industries. Area companies are invited to buy booths to promote their businesses. Attendees will meet some of the area’s premier business leaders, sample their products, and share ideas, contacts, and business referrals. Roundtable to discuss ‘Patriot Privateers’ Captain Ken Miller and able seaman Raoul Mallalieu will present “Patriot Privateers: New Jersey’s Whaleboat War” at the Hermitage Roundtable meeting on April 27 at 7:30 p.m. Miller and Mallalieu will discuss tactics, accounts, and the contributions of the patriot privateers and their roles in the war of supply during the American Revolution. The two speakers will be dressed in period-style garb and will bring weapons and models of the crafts used. The Hermitage Roundtable meets at the Hermitage, 335 North Franklin Turnpike in Ho-Ho-Kus. Support group to meet LifeLines, a supportive and informative resource for prostate cancer patients and their partners in northern Bergen County, will meet Tuesday, April 26 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the Church of the Presentation in Upper Saddle River, 271 West Saddle River Road in Upper Saddle River. The group was formed by prostate cancer patients to share information and experience about available treatment and service resources. Autism acceptance event rescheduled On May 5, CAPS Cares will present Ellen Sabin, author of “The Autism Acceptance Book: Being a Friend with Someone with Autism.” The event will be held at Northern Highlands Regional High School, 298 Hillside Avenue in Allendale, from 7 to 9 p.m. Sabin will speak about creating acceptance of those affected by autism and the importance of educating the public about autism. She will offer suggestions, including specific interactive exercises that support tolerance and acceptance of individuals with autism. (continued on page 22)
