The WCC5KBanner(4-27-11) way for the expected this week, paves the hiring of 6 x .75 an architect to do the work and to ultimately go out to bid on the construction. The ordinance authorizes the 1,100 sq. ft. addition along with alterations in approximately 600 sq. ft. of the existing structure. It also appropriates $300,000 for the project, all of it to be paid for with private donations received by the library. In February, the council approved a contribution of $100,000 from the borough’s capital improvement fund, bringing the total to the estimated project cost of $400,000. Borough Administrator Gary Kratz explained that because the library is a municipally-owned building, the borough has to approve the work and actually issue the needed contracts. “All of us feel it’s very important to have the library in our town,” said Councilwoman Anita Bozzo at the ordinance’s introduction. “People think that the internet is an alternative, but it is not,” she said. “It’s a good investment for the future, for our children and residents, similar to the high school track, which lots of people can use and enjoy. On Saturday, April 30, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Waldwick Police Department will take part in the DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day. Residents are encouraged to safely dispose of unwanted medications by bringing them to the rear of the Waldwick Public Safety Building at 15 East Prospect Street. The service is free and anonymous; no questions asked. According to a recent DEA press release, this initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high. More Americans currently abuse prescription drugs than the number of those using cocaine, hallucinogens, and heroin combined, according to the 2009 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. The council this week was expected to hire Environetics Group Architects, PC to work on the project. The Englewood Cliffs firm submitted a proposal not to exceed $39,000 to prepare the specifications for the addition and perform construction inspections. Librarian Patty Boyd attended the meeting to thank the mayor and council for the borough’s contribution and overall support. She told the governing body that the fund drive is about $40,000 short of its goal for the construction, but that the library board has commitments from organizations and individuals to cover the amount before year’s end. Of the funds on hand, $90,000 is from revenues from the Library’s U.S. Passport Application Acceptance Program. The Waldwick Chamber of Commerce donated $1,000 from its 2010 5K Run proceeds to the effort last week. Plans call for a “bump-out” along the east side of the building which will double the size of the existing undersized meeting room. The existing meeting space would be converted into a multi-purpose room that would provide storage space for local history materials and would serve as a conference room and an area for quiet study. Planning board approval would be required. The addition would retain the building’s traditional look by maintaining the brownstone façade, and would incorporate 1956-style windows. Due to the bump-out method of construction, there would be no interruptions in the library’s service to the public, the building would not close down, and no off-site storage would be needed. HOME HARDWARE Offers More WEBER® Grill Options Than Any Other Store We Carry The Entire Line Of WEBER® Grills From Standard Models To Premium Versions Not Available In Many Stores.
