Waldwick residents are encouraged to come out in force Sunday, May 1 to cheer on the runners and walkers participating in the Waldwick Chamber of Commerce’s 4-27-11 janine Run & 1 Mile Walk, fourth annual 5K scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. WCC5KBanner(4-27-11) from the Waldwick High School track. 6 x“It’s going to be a fun day. We’re expect.75 ing a great turnout, and we want people to line the route and fill the stands cheering the runners and walkers,” said run Director Stan Kowalski. He added that pre-registration is well ahead of last year, and that the sponsor and cash donations from businesses have been extremely generous. “People are really excited about the race when they drop off the registration forms,” said Barbara Jackson of Kallman Travel. “The point is that we’re raising the money to give back to the community,” said Chamber President Christine Figliuolo. Massage Envy Spa is this year’s Presenting Sponsor, and The Village Grille is the Platinum sponsor. In all 42 businesses have signed on as sponsors for the Grand Prix-sanctioned event. Others are donating food and services: Ho-Ho-Kus Bagels is donating mini bagels; Starbucks of Wyckoff is providing coffee, and Stop & Shop is contributing fruit and water. Massage Envy will offer free mini massages at the track and a free 30minute upgrade at the spa to runners, and Dr. Andrew Matassa of Waldwick Family Chiropractic will stretch runners before the race. The Village Grille is giving participants a 15 percent discount all week. Photographer Bill Smithuysen will photograph the event, and the photos will be available afterwards through the chamber’s website. The first 300 registrants will receive commemorative t-shirts and deluxe goody bags chock full of items donated by chamber members, so early registration is recommended to avoid dissappointment. “Frantic,” a local classic rock band, will perform (weather permitting) at the finish line, and DJ Willie will provide music and event announcements throughout. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Waldwick community, with a special donation given to the “Kisses 4 Kelly” fundraising effort. Male and female top overall finishers will receive a watch

Don’t miss the 5K Run-1 Mile Walk this Sunday
Waldwick High School student Tyler Diamond’s design will be featured on the 5K Run t-shirts. His design was selected from among seven entries in a competition organized by high school teacher Jamie Ruch to raise awareness of the Kisses4Kelly fundraising effort. The design, shown at right, will be printed on the sleeve of the t-shirts to be worn by the Run’s participants. Diamond will receive a $35 gift certificate from the chamber. All seven contestants will receive complimentary registration to the event and $10 added to a savings account at TD Bank in Allendale. Kisses4Kelly will be the primary recipient of this year’s 5K Run proceeds. Kelly Bjork, 16 years old and a junior at Waldwick High School, is undergoing treatment for a brain tumor, and friends have formed Kisses4Kelly to help the

Top male and female Waldwick winners will receive a $50 gift certificate from New Balance North Jersey, and their names will be inscribed on the Waldwick Chamber of Commerce 5K plaque in Borough Hall. Medals and gift certificates will be given to all first place finishers in each of the nine age brackets, from seven to 80 years old. Pre-registration pick up will be on Saturday, April 30 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Waldwick Ambulance Corps garage on Wyckoff Avenue. Registration forms may be picked up and dropped off at Massage Envy Spa, Village Grille, Kallman Travel, Excel Orthopedic, Waldwick Town Hall and Plaza Jewelers.
