Register for senior programs Beginning the week of May 3, a new session of programs for seniors will begin at the Community Center in Ridgewood Village Hall, 131 North Maple Avenue. Fitness programs include Silver Strength and Motion, Volt Fitness for Men, Jazzercise, restorative yoga, walking, and Zumba dance instruction. Each program provides a list of benefits for better health. Relax with Mindful Meditation or improve art skills with Chinese Brush Painting. Village children, ages seven to 18, are welcome to participate. Swimmers between the ages of nine and 18 who have passed the Graydon Deep Water Test are invited to join the 2011 Competitive Graydon Swim Team. Practices will focus on stroke refinement, starts and turns, and endurance. The Graydon Pool Swim Team competitively swims in the Lake League of the New Jersey Pool Manager’s Association, which holds dual meets on Monday and Thursday evenings. Swimmers seven and eight years of age are invited to join the pre-comp swim team. This team is for swimmers who are able to tread water for 30 seconds and are ready for lap swimming in deep water. Practices will focus on stroke development, diving, and endurance. The team will compete in intra-squad meets home at Graydon through July 29 as follows: 11 years and up at 12:30 p.m., nine- and 10-year-olds at 1:30 p.m., and seven- and eight-year-olds at 2:30 p.m. All swim team members must be valid 2011 Graydon Pool badge holders and all competitive swimmers must have passed the Deep Water Test as administered by the lifeguard staff before the first dual meet. Early registration is suggested. The fee is $150 for the first family swimmer; $100 each additional family member. Co-ed beach volleyball offered This spring, Ridgewood Parks and Recreation will offer volleyball instruction and skill development to students in grades five through eight. The program will cover rules, game play, and strategy. Sessions will be held on Fridays from 4 to 6 p.m., beginning May 6 at Graydon Pool, 259 North Maple Avenue. Skateboard instruction available Ridgewood Parks and Recreation will offer a six-session skateboarding instruction program with certified instructor Ketan Malhotra. The program is designed for children in first grade and older. The program will meet from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m. at the Rink, 259 North Maple Avenue, beginning May 3. Participants will learn about safety as they learn to ride, perform basic tricks, and maintain their boards. Rain makeup dates will be announced as needed. The cost for each participant is $75. Book Fair scheduled The Ridgewood Cooperative Nursery School will hold a Scholastic Book Fair on May 4 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on May 5 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. in the East Room of the Ridgewood United Methodist Church, 100 Dayton Street in Ridgewood. The Book Fair Carnival will include contests with prizes, crafts, and a souvenir carnival photo. A nonsectarian school, the co-op offers morning and afternoon classes for children ages two through four, Mommy & Me classes, and kindergarten enrichment. The co-op is organized and run by parents. Operation Take Back planned The Ridgewood Police Department will sponsor Operation Take Back from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on April 30. Residents are invited to drop off unwanted and expired prescription and over-the-counter drugs at police headquarters. The police will dispose of the drugs. Gallery hosts group exhibit Now through May 15, The Cottage Place Gallery will present a group exhibit of works by The Painting Affiliates of the Art Center of Northern New Jersey. The gallery is located at the Unitarian Society of Ridgewood at 113 Cottage Place.
