Write-in candidate can earn seat on school board
by John Koster The leading, qualified write-in candidate will win a seat on the Glen Rock Board of Education since only two candidates, both incumbents, filed nomination petitions for the three available seats. The borough’s voters will also cast their ballots on the $40,033,500 levy associated with the 2011-12 school budget. School Board President Rona McNabola and incumbent trustee Randi Blumberg filed for three-year terms, but Bill Clark, a two-term incumbent, opted not to seek another term this year. McNabola, a graduate of Russell Sage College with graduate credits from Rutgers University, is widely recognized as an expert on the abilities and rights of individuals with special needs. Despite having lost and then regained a board seat, McNabola is the Glen Rock Board of Education’s ranking incumbent in terms of years actually served. Blumberg has been president of both the Glen Rock Middle School-High School Home & School Association and the Coleman School Home & School Association. The candidate holds a degree from Ramapo College and has attended graduate school at the New School in New York City.
Blumberg was recently the only board member to vote against outsourcing teachers’ aides and custodial positions in the school system. The outsourcing was unpopular with board members, and even more so with the teachers and with many members of the public, but the administration pointed out the need to control school spending in tough economic times. Those residents who do not oppose outsourcing point out that people now in teachers’ aide and custodial jobs have the option of applying to the outsourcing contractors -- the same option offered when Wyckoff’s K-8 system went over to outsourcing a few years ago.
Budget includes $75 tax increase
The Glen Rock Council has adopted a 2011 budget that will increase the municipal-purpose taxes on a borough home valued at $547,600 by about $75. The budget, adopted on April 13, calls for total appropriations of $16,525,756. The amount to be raised by taxation for municipal purposes is $11,638,836. This includes a minimum library levy of $833,916. There were no comments from the audi-
ence at the hearing related to the budget. Earlier in the week, the council had rejected a proposal for shared recycling services with the Borough of Fair Lawn because resident objections in Glen Rock convinced the council members that the advantages of a small savings would be outweighed by the inconvenience to Glen Rock residents.
