Page 4 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • April 20, 2011 Ridgewood Challenger, incumbents vie for board seats by John Koster The departure of one candidate from the April 27 Ridgewood Board of Education contest leaves one challenger facing two incumbent trustees for the two seats available this year. Gerald Clark, a resident who described himself as an opponent of the excessive use of sports fields, dropped out of the race last week. Clark’s children attend Ridgewood High School and his wife is a teacher’s aide at Travell School. Christina Krauss is now the only challenger to the two incumbent board members. Krauss, who previously owned a clothing and accessories store, has two children in the Ridgewood school system. A 16-year resident, Krauss has been a volunteer with Project Pride, served as a class parent, and belonged to the Ridgewood Chamber of Commerce. One of her children graduated from Ridgewood High School and the other attends the Somerville School. Incumbent Sheila Brogan has 15 years of experience on the Ridgewood Board of Education. All three of her children are graduates of Ridgewood High School. Brogan is a social worker with Children’s Aid and Family Services, where she coordinates the eldercare program. Brogan was one of the prime instigators of the Ridgewood Senior Center and Ridgewood Youth Center now located on the first floor of Ridgewood Village Hall. The center is now a place where older and younger residents can enjoy meetings, games, and assembly space. Brogan has served five consecutive terms on the board, and helped set up the Ridgewood Academy for Health Professionals coordinated with Valley Hospital, a program where students with a serious interest in medicine can experience hospital work. Brogan keeps the board informed of legislative matters at each meeting. Incumbent Laurie Goodman, a freelance copy editor, has served as president of the Somerville School’s Home & School Association, worked as treasurer of the Federated Home & School Association, and co-chaired Project Graduation when her daughter was a senior at Ridgewood High School. She has also served on the Municipal Alliance. Voters in next week’s election will also cast their ballots on the $81,323,178 tax levy associated with the 2011-12 school budget.
