Hydrants declared adequate for school’s fire safety
by John Koster A Ridgewood Water Company executive told the Ridgewood Village Council last week that a report indicating inadequate water pressure at the hydrant near Ridgewood High School was a clerical error, and that recent checkups indicate that the hydrant has adequate water pressure for any likely fire emergency. “Basically, I can provide more water than your trucks can pump,” said Eric Fooder of the Ridgewood Water Company. He said that a figure quoted by retired Ridgewood Fire Chief James Bombace was alarming -- but that it was apparently based on faulty recording. A checkup conducted after Bombace spoke before the council some weeks ago found that the water pressure at the hydrant outside the high school was on the same level as Ridgewood’s other hydrants, and was quite ample to suppress any fires that might occur. “This one report was extremely low, and didn’t make sense,” Fooder said. The report cited by Bombace, Fooder said, must have reflected a mistake in paperwork rather than a problem with water pressure. He asserted, “At no point was anybody at the high school ever in danger.”
Ridgewood’s present fire chief, Jim Van Goor, reportedly concurred with Village Manager Kenneth Gabbert that the water pressure is adequate and that the report cited by Bombace was a paperwork error, though the figures Bombace reported were, in fact, the ones on the paper. Bombace was in the audience at the meeting but did not comment.
