Page 4 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • April 13, 2011 Ridgewood The Saturday night performance of Ridgewood High School’s Asian Festival raised $3,400 for tsunami relief as parents and friends of the students paid admission fees to watch the students perform their traditional and modern dances and other entertainment. The students and their advisors decided to donate the entire proceeds of the evening performance to agencies involved in helping Japan recover from the catastrophe that may have killed as many as 25,000 people. The disasters left hundreds of thousands homeless or without electricity and heat, and left northeastern Honshu, the biggest Japanese island, compromised with seawater and subject to radiation. Students from China, Japan, Korea, India, and the Philippines take part in the Ridgewood High School Asian Festival every year, learning and performing Asian dances in costume, improvising modern dances, and displaying martial arts skills. Students often take part in a number of different performances and are not limited by their country of original of ancestry. Favorites include the Korean fan dance, the Chinese lion dance, the Japanese shrine procession and drumming, and the Indian dancing, which often attracts dancers of European and Asian Indian ancestry. The Asian Festival is the major ethnic event of Ridgewood High School, which also celebrates African and Caribbean cultures with dance and music festivals.
