April 13, 2011 THE VILLADOM TIMES II & IV • Page 19 ‘Tracy & Hepburn’ is collection for classic cinema fans by Dennis Seuling He was down to earth. She was aristocratic. His style was natural. Hers was often mannered. Though they were opposites in many ways, Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn created magic when they were paired onscreen. “Tracy and Hepburn: The Definitive Collection” (Warner Home Video) contains nine of their movies, including the wonderful “Pat and Mike” (1952) and the duo’s final film together, “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” (1967). Their first film together, “Woman of the Year” (1942), set the pattern for what would become a formula that clicked with audiences for over two decades. Tess and Sam work for the same newspaper. He’s a sports writer; she’s a columnist and one of the most famous feminists in the country. The plot is a romantic comedy chronicling how these two worlds-apart people are drawn together. The ice breaker is a great scene in which Sam takes Tess to a baseball game. She is clueless about the rules. He patiently explains how the game is played, and over nine innings she becomes a fan, cheering on the team and chatting up veteran fans in the stands. The Tracy-Hepburn chemistry is undeniable. Also in the set is “Adam’s Rib” (1949), with Hepburn starring as the defense attorney for a woman (Judy Holliday) accused of murder, and Tracy as her husband, Adam, the prosecutor in the same case. Their marital peace is shattered when too much of the case is brought home. “Desk Set” (1957) pits information librarian Hepburn against efficiency expert Tracy, sent to weigh the advantages of replacing the librarian and her staff with a computer. The set also contains “Without Love” (1945) and “State of the Union” (1948), and two titles never before released on DVD: “Sea of Grass” (1947) and “Keeper of the Flame” (1942). Extras include vintage shorts, classic cartoons, “Desk Set” commentary, and “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” celebrity introductions. “Country Strong” (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment) is about substance abuse, romance, jealousy, a career in decline, and a troubled marriage. Country singer Kelly Canter (Gwyneth Paltrow) is in a rehab facility undergoing alcohol detox. She has developed a bond with rehab employee and smalltime country singer Beau Hutton (Garrett Hedlund). James Canter (Tim McGraw), Kelly’s husband/manager, has come to take her out of rehab early to set out on a tour across Texas. Also along on the tour is young, up-and-coming singer Chiles Stanton (Leighton Meester) and, at Kelly’s insistence, Beau. Paltrow is adequate, but the movie treads the boards of cliché throughout and is very predictable. As a backstage study of an artist struggling with substance dependence, it often comes off ho-hum and dull. Director Shana Feste has problems with dramatic emphasis and pacing. There are few highs and lows, just the same middleground tone throughout. Available on both Blu-ray and DVD, Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn in ‘Woman of the Year.’ “Country Strong” contains lots of bonus materials, including the original ending, music videos with Sara Evans and Paltrow, deleted scenes, and an extended performance of “Shake That Thing” by Paltrow. Blu-ray exclusive materials include several behind-the-scenes featurettes. Double-billed on Blu-ray are “Tron: Legacy” and the original “Tron” (Walt (continued on Crossword page) C • O • R • T• I • N • A R I S T O R A N T E Fine Dining For Lunch & Dinner Dine & Dance • Live Entertainment Friday, May 13: Joe Zisa & Friends, 8pm Call for reservations Lunch Starts at $7.00 • Mon-Fri 11:30AM–2:30PM Dinner Starts at $12 • Mon-Thurs 5PM–9:30PM • Fri & Sat 5PM–10PM Wednesdays: Saturdays: Ray La Rovere, Piano and Emil Rizzo, Mandolin Mike Constantino, Piano Private Party Room For Up To 60 People • Call for Reservations - 973-942-1750 118 Berkshire Ave., Paterson, NJ (Totowa Section) • www.cortinarestaurant.com Char Test your knowledge of Mobster Expertise - DJ Rich will have questions about your favorite Mobster movies, actors & quotes.
