Religious Notes Grace United celebrates Holy Week Grace United Methodist Church in Wyckoff will offer services on Holy Thursday, April 21 at noon and 8 p.m. The evening service will include a reenactment of the Last Supper. A Good Friday, April 22, service of the Tenebrae will be held at 8 p.m. in the chapel. On Easter Sunday, April 24 traditional services will be held at 9 and 11 a.m. There will also be a contemporary service celebrated at 9 a.m. Grace Methodist is located at 555 Russell Avenue in Wyckoff. Passover services set Temple Israel of Ridgewood will begin this year’s Pesach (Passover) observance with the blessing of Ta’anit Bekhorim, Fast of the First Born, on Monday, April 18 at 7 a.m. Temple Israel is hosting this joint service with the Glen Rock Jewish Center and Rabbi Neil Tow will be teaching a selection from Rabbinic literature for the service. Services for the First and Second Day of Passover will be held April 19 and 20 at 9:30 a.m. Chol HaMoed (weekday) services will celebrate the intermediate days of Passover on Sunday, April 24 at 9 a.m. Services for the seventh and last day of Passover will take place on April 25 and April 26 at 9 a.m., with Yizkor (Memorial Service) at approximately 10:30 a.m. on April 26. Passover is the Jewish holiday day and festival commemorating the freedom of the ancient Israelites from slavery in Egypt to practice their religion. Holy Week at Old Paramus Church Ridgewood’s Old Paramus Reformed Church invites the community to its Holy Week services. A “Hosanna Day” Family Service will be held at 10 a.m. on April 17 and will include the distribution of palms and a procession from the parish hall to the sanctuary. Worship music will include selections from Handel’s “Messiah.” On April 21, Maundy Thursday, at 7:30 p.m., a service April 13, 2011 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 17 of personal meditation, prayers, and music will be held, with Communion served to all who wish to participate. The 21-voice Chancel Choir will undertake parts of a Mass titled “The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace,” composed in 2001 by Englishman Karl Jenkins, and first performed by 150 voices at a concert in Wales. Recorded on DVD, it was released one week prior to 9/11. Two Good Friday services will be held at 11:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m., The service will be based on “The Stones of Suffering.” At both services, each worshiper will be given a stone as a symbol of personal suffering, and join in a series of Scripture readings, prayers, hymns, and extinguishing of candles into darkness. On April 24, Easter Sunday, at 10 a.m. the church will celebrate Christ’s Resurrection. The sermon will be by Pastor Marsden, and special music by the choir, organ and brass, will concludes with the congregation joining the Handel’s “Hallelujah Chorus.” The church is located at 660 East Glen Avenue in Ridgewood. Contact them at (201) 444-5933. Holy Week celebrated Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Glen Rock will offer services celebrating Holy Week and Easter Sunday. Palm/Passion Sunday will be celebrated at Central School, 600 South Maple Avenue, on April 17 at 10:30 a.m. Members of the community are welcome. The service will begin with the outdoor distribution, blessing, and Procession of the Palms. The procession is led by a crucifer, Pastor Roger Spencer and Vicar Anja Stuckenberger, along with a brass quintet. The congregation is invited to process. During the worship service, there will be a dramatic reading of the Passion according to Saint Matthew, including congregational participation. Communion will be celebrated. On Maundy Thursday, April 21, the service of Holy Communion will be held at 8 p.m. in the church chapel, 233 South Highwood Avenue. As is tradition, the altar will be “stripped” of adornment in preparation for Good Friday. The Children’s Good Friday Narrative will be held in conjunction with All Saints Episcopal Church on April 22. The 10 a.m. service will take place in the Good Shepherd Memorial Chapel. Parents and children of the community are welcome. The Tenebrae Service on Friday, April 22 will be held at All Saints Episcopal Church, 40 Central Avenue, at 8 p.m. This service marks the last words of Jesus on the cross with scripture, music, sights, and sounds. Easter Sunday, April 24 will be celebrated with two morning services. At 8:30 a.m., the Service of Holy Communion will begin with the Lighting of Lights for the dawning of Easter and the reaffirmation of baptismal vows. The auditorium at Central School will be illuminated in brightness as the Easter observance begins. At 9:30 a.m., a continental breakfast for all will be held in the Central School hallway and classrooms. Also at 9:30 a.m., there will be an Easter Egg Hunt on the school grounds for children up to and including third grade. At 10:30 a.m., the Resurrection Festival Service of Holy Communion will be celebrated with festive processions and music, including Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus from the “Messiah.” The Rev.
