Arbor Day celebration set The Friends of the Glen Rock Arboretum will hold an Arbor Day tree planting ceremony at the Thiekle Arboretum in Glen Rock on Friday, April 29 at 10:30 a.m. Delegations of student, faculty, and parents from Glen Rock schools and borough residents are invited. Students will plant the tree. This year marks the borough’s 19th Arbor Day celebration. In the past, the Friends chose understory trees for planting at the arboretum. This year marks the start of a new program to replenish wetland woods with young native tall trees. After the ceremony, refreshments will be served. RSVP; call (201) 444-1687. The arboretum is located on Doremus Avenue next to the pool parking lot. Club holds golf registration The Activities Club will meet on April 19 at the Community Church in Glen Rock at 1:30 p.m. Those who attend may sign up for the club’s golf program. The club plays golf each Thursday morning at the Meadows Golf Club in Lincoln Park. Retired and semi-retired men interested in learning about the Club and its 22 activities are welcome. Open House set Academy of Our Lady will hold an Open House for its pre-kindergarten classes for two-, three-, and four-year-olds on Tuesday, April 19 form 9 to 10:30 a.m. Sessions are two, three, four or five days with additional full-day options, morning care, and aftercare. The school offers indoor and outdoor play areas, a full-time nurse, and other enrichment activities. Prospective students may visit on Buddy Day, Wednesday, April 20 for morning classes. The school offers kindergarten, with a half- or full-day option, and classes for grades one through eight with a full academic program, complemented by religion, computer, library, music, art, physical education, and Spanish classes. Scouts host Pancake Breakfast Boy Scout Troop 27 and Cub Scout Pack 27 of Glen Rock will hold a Pancake Breakfast in the Monsignor Holmes Recreational Building at Saint Catharine’s Church, 905 South Maple Avenue in Glen Rock, on April 17 from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. The breakfast will include pancakes, sausages, bagels, juice, coffee, and tea. Tickets are $6 per adult, and $20 per family; children age five and under will be admitted free of charge. Tickets may be purchased in advance from Scouts or at the door. Proceeds from the event will be used for Scouting activities, including camping trips. Garden Club learns about trees Steve Skyer of the Bartlett Tree Experts in Ridgewood will address the Glen Rock Garden Club on Wednesday, April 20
at 7:45 p.m. in the Glen Rock Municipal Annex at 678 Maple Avenue. Refreshments will be served. Skyer, a certified arborist with 15 years of experience in the green industry, will present “Modern Arbor Culture.” The Glen Rock Garden Club has been in existence since 1923. While riding the train to New York, Glen Rock residents Louie Rice, Mr. Pilkington, and Dr. Beach decided that Glen Rock needed a Garden Club. A notice in the local newspaper drew 18 people to the first meeting on Nov. 12, 1923. Anyone interested in joining the club may contact Donald Levine at (201) 4476099, or come to a club meeting. Seniors plan luncheon The Glen Rock Seniors have planned an April 13 trip to the Brownstone in Paterson. Attendees will have lunch and enjoy the music of the ‘50s and ‘60s by “Moonlight Serenade.” The bus will depart from Wilde Park at 10 a.m. The cost is $41 for members and $44 for non-members. To reserve a space, call Evelyn at (201) 4459238. Fish & Chips Dinner set Tickets are now available for the Fish & Chips Dinner sponsored by the Women’s Guild of Community Church. The dinner will be held April 14 in Fellowship Hall at the Community Church of Glen Rock, 354 Rock Road. The old-fashioned fish fry, an annual tradition, will be catered by Thistle. Takeout dinners and special orders of chicken must be ordered at time of ticket purchase. Takeout meals will be ready for pickup from 6 to 6:30 p.m.; sit-down dinners will be served continuously from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The dinner includes a fish fillet,
french fries, coleslaw, beverages, and dessert. Tickets are $14 for adults and $6.50 for children ages four through 12. Children three years old and under will be admitted free. Trip planned for seniors The Glen Rock Seniors will travel to the Huntington Hills Playhouse to see “Blithe Spirit” on April 20. Lunch will be included with the performance. The bus will depart Wilde Park at 9:30 a.m. Tickets for the event are $57 for members and $63 for non-members. To reserve a ticket, call Andy at (201) 248-9436. Casino Night Fundraiser planned The Glen Rock Cooperative Nursery School will host a Casino Night fundraiser on Saturday, May 7 at the Community Church auditorium, 354 Rock Road in Glen Rock. The event will include appetizers, a casual dinner, and dessert. Refreshments and adult beverages will also be included. Each participant will be provided “fun” money for the evening. The event will feature gift baskets, and prizes – including a cash prize. Advertisers for the event program, sponsors, and prize donations are sought. Donations are tax-deductable. Tickets are $45.
