Glen Rock April 13, 2011 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 11 Officials learn Onomachi schools are open by John Koster Glen Rock Mayor John van Keuren and Planning Board Secretary Nancy Spiller were delighted to learn that the schools in Onomachi, Japan, had reopened last week Onomachi Mayor Yasuo Nemoto, who had joined students and other chaperones in the summer of 2011 when the youngsters stayed for a week with Glen Rock families, sent an e-mail thanking Glen Rock families and officials for their concern and reporting that Onomachi’s schools, closed since March 11, reopened on April 6. Mayor Nemoto said the students were glad to resume their education and usually they have club activities every day, but now they do not. “I pray for the end of the nuclear power generation accident,” Mayor Nemoto added. “Now the government says Onomachi is safe, so we are looking forward to see the students.” He added that he expected this year’s summer tour would be on schedule, since the students from Onomachi look forward to visiting America and staying in Glen Rock. Mayor van Keuren and Spiller were pleased to learn that things in Onomachi were getting back to normal. The town was immediately outside the disaster zone and residents opened their homes to Japanese from Fukushima who had lost their houses and were affected by the radiation in the aftermath of the tsunami. The exchange program started many years ago, when Kristen Stewart O’Brien was teaching English in Onomachi schools and was asked to arrange trips to foster mutual understanding. Since then, hundreds of Onomachi students have visited Glen Rock and dozens of Glen Rock residents have visited Onomachi each summer. after being closed for almost a month due to the impact of the tsunami and the subsequent April school vacation.
