Councilwoman Bernadette Walsh established with Gabbert that the wibit would be anchored to the bottom of the pool to keep it from drifting, and would not be a safety hazard. The tubular assembly makes it all but impossible for a swimmer to be trapped beneath the raft, and marginal swimmers would be wearing the life jackets that are part of the purchase. In other business, the council approved an initiative by the Ridgewood Baseball and Softball Association to reconfigure and improve an existing baseball diamond on Veterans Field between Kasschau Shell and the pump house so that local youngsters have improved access to sports fields for the coming summer sports schedule. Ed Seavers of the RBSA advanced the project and was informally told that it would be acceptable when Seavers said that the RBSA would pay the $120,000 needed for soil work and a new backstop. “It’s a tradeoff of which teams play on which fields,” Seavers said. “We have more room than we thought we did.” “I think this is an excellent use of the existing field,” said Councilman Stephen Wellinghorst. Council Member Walsh, however, drew a wry reaction from Mayor Keith Killion when she said that some sports groups had asked for increased illumination on the perimeter of Veterans Field in case the council doesn’t approve plans to keep the Ridgewood High School sports field lights on until 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. Mayor Killion was visibly dismayed at the suggestion of more night illumination that could impact residential homes. “The idea is still in its infancy,” Walsh said. “Lights should only be installed where there is minimal impact on residential homes,” Killion replied.
