Kitty Kelly brings Irish songs and dances to village
People were literally dancing in the aisles at the Ridgewood Library as Kitty Kelly and her friends performed a program of Irish songs that drew a capacity crowd. Bud O’Boyle, a regular bicyclist at the Ridgewood Duck Pond, and his wife Ann danced every waltz as Kelly and Peter McKiernan sang, Colin Kelly (Kitty’s brother) played drums, and John Vesey played the button accordion with the fervor that had won him the North American button accordion championship three times. The dancing in the aisles became ever more tempting as the band spun gentle and sentimental songs into wild, pulsating hornpipes and jigs. Ten minutes into the performance, everybody was Irish in spirit and nobody minded when the singing and dancing went an hour over schedule. Even the library staffers were smiling as the group left just before closing time on March 27. “A couple of years ago, we had people dancing in the aisles,” Kelly told the audience. “This is a no-judgment zone. If you feel like dancing, do it.” A dozen members of the audience took her up on it. Many of the packed audience were regulars, some had been born in Ireland, and many had been there, but the ambiance was welcoming to total strangers as well as old and dear friends of the performers. The banter also had Irish eyes smiling. “Bud, you’re 82,” Kitty said to the chieftain among the aisle dancers. “Look at what great shape he’s in.”
“I’ll be 83 in September,” the man called back to the stage. “What’s your secret, Bud?” Kitty asked. “A little Guinness now and then?” “I married a German girl,” he replied. The audience laughed and applauded. “So she lets you drink beer around the house, then?” Kitty retorted. More laughter, more applause, and more music that brought more and more couples out to dance in the aisles. Kitty sometimes explained the music. She pointed out that the Irish songs in minor key tended to be sad, while the songs in major key tended to be frisky and full of mirth. (continued on page 20)
