Casino Night Fundraiser planned The Glen Rock Cooperative Nursery School will host a Casino Night fundraiser on Saturday, May 7 at the Community Church auditorium, 354 Rock Road in Glen Rock. The event will include appetizers, a casual dinner, and dessert. Refreshments and adult beverages will also be included. Each participant will be provided “fun” money for the evening. The event will feature gift baskets, and prizes – including a cash prize. Advertisers for the event program, sponsors, and prize donations are sought. Donations are tax-deductable. Tickets are $45. All proceeds from this evening’s event will benefit of the Glen Rock Coop Nursery School. Call (201) 652-1228 for tickets and more information. Library sponsors teen events Teens are invited to the Glen Rock Public Library, 315 Rock Road in Glen Rock, for an April full of events. Movie nights, a video game tournament, and a scavenger hunt are a few of this month’s offerings. On April 8 and 29 from 8 to 10 p.m., the library will host Teen Movie Nights. The first offering of is a new zombie horror/comedy, and the second film pits a young man against a series of formidable foes to win the woman of his dreams. To learn more, see the flyers posted in the library. No registration is required. The Teen Video Game Tournament will be played April 9 from 2 to 4 p.m. Players will compete in a Wii game to determine the best player of the day. Prizes will be awarded for first, second, and third place finishers. Registration required. The Sunday Scavenger Hunt will take place April 17 from 11 a.m. to noon. Scattered throughout the library is a treasure trove of prizes. Participants may keep all game containers and the prizes inside. Each container is worth points. The player with the most at the end of the event will leave with the grand prize. Registration is required. On April 18, magician Mark Zacharia will make his second appearance at the library from 2 to 3 p.m. His program, “Card Tricks without Skill,” will include a performance and a lesson on how he makes the magic happen.
There is no age limit for this event, and no registration is required. The Teen Advisory and Teen Book Discussion Groups will continue to meet throughout April. Both meet on alternating Monday evenings from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. A new wave of books for the book discussion group will start on April 18. For a list of books, visit the reference desk. All teen programming is paid for by the Friends of the Glen Rock Public Library. Seniors plan luncheon The Glen Rock Seniors have planned an April 13 trip to the Brownstone in Paterson. Attendees will have lunch and enjoy the music of the ‘50s and ‘60s by “Moonlight Serenade.” The bus will depart from Wilde Park at 10 a.m. The cost is $41 for members and $44 for non-members. Garden Club learns about trees Steve Skyer of the Bartlett Tree Experts in Ridgewood will address the Glen Rock Garden Club on Wednesday, April 20 at 7:45 p.m. in the Glen Rock Municipal Annex at 678 Maple Avenue. Refreshments will be served. Skyer, a certified arborist with 15 years of experience in the green industry, will present “Modern Arbor Culture.” The Glen Rock Garden Club has been in existence since 1923. While riding the train to New York, Glen Rock residents Louie Rice, Mr. Pilkington, and Dr. Beach decided that Glen Rock needed a Garden Club. A notice in the local
newspaper drew 18 people to the first meeting on Nov. 12, 1923. Anyone interested in joining the club may contact Donald Levine at (201) 447-6099, or come to a club meeting. Language lectures to begin Glen Rock resident Sharon Meyer will repeat her “Talk the Talk” series of language lectures at the Glen Rock Library beginning April 7 at 7:30 p.m. The library is located at 315 Rock Road.The first presentation will be on families of world languages. Later discussions will include “History of the English Language” and “Egyptian Hieroglyphics.” Recently retired from full-time foreign language teaching, Meyer has lived in five European countries. Derby Social set The Coleman Home and School Association will host a Derby Social on Saturday, April 9 at Saint Catharine’s Community Hall from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. This event, which is a benefit for the school’s physical education program, will feature video horse races and an opportunity to acquire original artwork created by each grade level at Coleman School. Families and area businesses may also name a horse and jockey participating in one of the races. In addition to dancing, food, and spirits, there will be many great prizes, including gift certificates/free passes to area businesses including Francesca’s, Volt Fitness, Beekman’s, Highlights and Hair, Glen Rock Inn, Superdome, In the Swing, and RetroFitness. Grand prizes include tickets to Disney World, New Jersey Devils tickets, New York Giants memorabilia, a free week of Busy Bee Summer Camp at the Community School, Mayor for the Day, and four spots on the fire truck at the Fourth of July parade.
