Midland Park September 28, 2011 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • Page 13 Safety First provides tips for kindergartners A Safety First Program was recently held for the incoming September 2011 kindergarten class in Midland Park. The program took place in the community room at the Midland Park Library. The first topic was pedestrian safety where kids learned the three rules before they cross the street, which are stop, look, and listen. The next topic was safety around animals in which the children role played scenarios with a Girl Scout walking a dog. The children then had to ask permission to pet it. The third topic was stranger danger in which Girl Scouts and adults role played being strangers and went up to kids asking them various questions. For example, ‘Do you want candy?’ or ‘If you want a puppy all you have to do is come to the back of my van.’ The final topic was the right way to call 911. Police Chief John Casson came and talked to the kids about 911 and they practiced dialing 911 by asking and answering the proper questions with an operator. At the end of each session, the children received a certificate of participation and a bag of additional educational materials.
