Page 6 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • September 21, 2011 Area Bergen County Executive Kathleen A. Donovan has announced that applications for the 2012 Bergen County History Grant Program are now available. This is the only local grant program available to Bergen County historical agencies to fund local historical organizations and projects. All first-time applicants are encouraged to attend the grant workshop on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. at the Bergen County Administration Building located at One Bergen County Plaza, Room 4B in Hackensack. General Operating Support Grants and Special Project Grants are now available. General Operating Support Grants are for established historical organizations with operating funds of at least $4,000 to assist with expenses that include, but are not limited to, salaries, contracted services, marketing and fundraising fees, utilities, staff training, maintenance of collections, and long-term planning. Special Project Grants are for specific history projects that contribute to the Bergen County historical record, promote local history, and assist and encourage the preservation of historic Bergen County. Projects that would be eligible include museum exhibits; publications; conserva- Bergen County announces 2012 History Grant Program tion of collections, archives, and historic cemeteries; preparation of National Register nominations for Bergen County historic properties; oral history projects; and production of history films or videos. Applicants for the 2012 Bergen County History Grant Program must be non-profit organizations based in Bergen County. Local municipalities and libraries may not apply for GOS Grants, but are eligible for SP grants. Funding must be matched by applicants on a 1:1 basis; this applies to expenses incurred from July 1, 2011 through June 30, 2012. The Bergen County Department of Parks, Division of Cultural and Historic Affairs actively seeks the participation of all persons and communities in its programs and services. County officials encourage local organizations that serve the culturally diverse local Bergen County population to create projects and programs that reflect the rich history of these communities. Applicants are encouraged to provide marketing and outreach to diverse communities and to produce programs that respond to the needs of ethnic and culturally diverse audiences. Organizations are required to first submit a Declaration of Intent to Apply to the Division of Cultural and Historic Affairs by Sept. 26. The grant application deadline is Oct. 28. Franklin Lakes The Franklin Lakes Public Library has announced its October lineup of children’s programs. Songwriter and entertainer Teri Merliss will present a five-week fall program for children ages three and up. Participants will listen to imaginative stories and sing original songs. There will be lots of interactive participation. Program dates will be Fridays at 11 a.m. on Oct. 7, 21, and 28, and Nov. 4 and 11. This event is a Family Special and is sponsored by Friends of the Library. The Paws for Reading program is back by popular demand. Beginning and accomplished readers in grades one through six are invited to read to certified therapy Public library offers children’s programs dogs. Participants polish their reading and public speaking skills while reading to these well-behaved animals for 10minute intervals. Young readers are invited to attend on Mondays, Oct. 3 and 17 and Nov. 7 and 21 from 4 to 5 p.m. On Oct. 27 at 4:15 p.m., the After 3 Theatre Company will perform “Halloween Frights and Flights!” Enjoy eerie stories. This program is recommended for children ages five and up. Registration for these programs is required.
