Page 22 THE VILLADOM TIMES I, II & IV • September 21, 2011 (continued from Restaurant page) “The Others” (Lionsgate) stars Nicole Kidman in an eerie tale about two photosensitive children and their mother, who believe their family home is haunted. While waiting for her husband to return from World War II, Grace Stewart (Kidman) retires with her children to a secluded island mansion. The children have a disease that requires they be kept out of direct sunlight. The three live there alone with oppressive, almost religious rules until Grace must hire a group of servants. After the servants enter, unusual events transpire, and Grace begins to wonder if her sanity is going or if there is something sinister in the house with them. In terms of atmosphere, “The Others” is reminiscent of “The Innocents,” based on Henry James’ “The Turn of the Screw.” Writer/director Alejandro Amenabar succeeds in creating and sustaining a palpable sense of foreboding without resorting to cheap shocks or going overboard with graphic visuals. It is the low-key style, the old-fashioned elegance, and restraint that make the movie suspenseful. Kidman turns in a believable performance as a steady woman who begins to unravel as events become more and more unsettling and a sense of deadly claustrophobia sets in. Special features include a making-of documentary, a featurette about visual effects, and a profile of the director. “Hawaii Five-O: The First Season” (Paramount Home DVD releases Entertainment) is an update of the original TV series, which ran from 1968 to 1980. The new series is about a new elite task force whose mission is to wipe out crime in the fiftieth state. Alex O’Loughlin stars as Detective Steve McGarrett, a decorated naval officer turned cop who heads the new team. Also starring are Scott Caan as Detective Danny “Danno” Williams, an ex-New Jersey cop; Danniel Dae Kim as Chin Ho Kelly, a former Honolulu police detective; and Grace Park as Kono Kalakaua, a native and new recruit. The six-disc DVD and Blu-ray sets include all 24 episodes plus numerous bonus features, including deleted scenes, a gag reel, an exploration of the legacy of the series, behind-the-scenes of the making of the pilot, a tour of the islands with Grace Park, footage of the show’s introduction at Comic-Con, a look at rescoring the show’s theme song, and commentary from the cast and crew. “Secrets in the Walls” (Vivendi Entertainment) is a paranormal thriller about single mom Rachel Easton (Jeri Ryan), who relocates her two daughters from a crowded Detroit apartment to a beautiful old house in the suburbs to get the fresh start they need. Everything goes according to plan until they start to hear terrifying cries from beyond the walls. To save her daughters and herself, Rachel must unravel a horrifying secret that has been haunting the house for 50 years. This is an atypical Lifetime movie since it deals with horror and the supernatural. Since it was made for TV, horror fans will find it rather tame. However, if you enjoy seeing actors amp up the melodrama with a minimum on on-screen violence, this one’s for you.
