September 7, 2011 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • Page 25 Franklin Lakes Scribe Jazz quartet ushers in music series Franklin Lakes Public Library, located at 470 DeKorte Drive in Franklin Lakes, will launch its Sunday Afternoon Music season with the sounds of vocalist and sax player Sandy Jacobs and her lively quartet. The program, Jazz Bebop and Beyond, will be performed at the library on Sunday, Sept. 18 at 2 p.m. The performance will include jazzed- up American standards from Cole Porter to Diane Krall. Seats will be provided on a first-come, first served basis. All are welcome to attend. This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Franklin Lakes Public Library. Fall Fun Day set The Presbyterian Church at Franklin Lakes will host Fall Fun Day on Sunday, Sept. 11 at the church, 730 Franklin Lake Road. The event will begin with Worship led by Pastor Louis Kilgore at 10 a.m. A barbecue and picnic will follow. Hot dogs, veggie burgers, hamburgers, and beverages will be provided. Participants are asked to bring salad or dessert. Activities will include face painting and pumpkin painting directed by church member and artist Mary Guidetti McColl and caricatures by local artist Dave McCoy. Beginning computer classes available at library The Franklin Lakes Public Library, 470 DeKorte Drive, will offer two computer courses this fall. A beginner’s computer class will be held on Wednesdays and Fridays, Sept. 7, 9, 14, and 16 from 11 a.m. to noon. Participants will learn the basics of how to use a personal computer. The four-part class will include instruction on using the mouse and keyboard, navigating the Web, search pages, word documents, and e-mail. Participants are asked to commit to all four classes. “Learn about eBay” will be offered on Sept. 23 at 10:30 a.m. Learn how to use this online auction site, create an account, what to look for when bidding, and how to list an item for sale. Post offers etiquette for the electronic age Learn the etiquette for texting, tweeting, and other electronic forms of communication when Peggy Post, great-granddaughter-in-law of Emily Post, and a director of the Emily Post Institute, speaks at the Woman’s Club of Franklin Lakes. This annual luncheon fundraiser is set for Oct. 19. Post, who is the author of more than 12 books on etiquette, will appear at the Indian Trail Club at 830 Franklin Lake Road. Her talk, “The New Emily Post,” will address proper etiquette for such modern issues as texting, tweeting, using Facebook, getting along in the workplace, wedding planning, and even throwing a divorce party. She will also sign copies of her newest book, “Emily Post’s Etiquette, 18th Edition: Manners for a New World,” an essential tool for navigating 21st century communication. Proceeds from this event will benefit Children’s Aid and Family Services, Community Blood Service HLA Registry, student scholarships, and local charities. The book signing, basket prizes, auction, and a cash bar will begin at 11 a.m. Lunch and the speaker will follow at noon. The cost of the event, which includes lunch, is $55 per person. Job search assistance classes available The Franklin Lakes Public Library is offering a series of four, four-hour classes specifically designed to assist in a job search. Sessions will be held on Wednesdays, Sept. 7 through 28, from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Topics to be covered include e-mail communication, exploring the Internet, basic elements of Microsoft Word, resumes, cover letters, thank you notes, and performing an online job search. This series is provided by the Broad Band Technology Opportunity Program administered by the New Jersey State Library through a grant by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration. Classes will be conducted by Bergen Community College instructors. Classes are free, and residents from any community are welcome to attend.
