Wyckoff Mayor Kevin Rooney cut short his own weekend activities to man Wyckoff Town Hall through the worst of Hurricane Irene, but he said that the real heroes of the storm were the township’s volunteer firefighters who slept at Wyckoff’s three fire houses to be ready for rescue calls. “The firemen, the ambulance corps, and the emergency service teams were magnificent, and the police performed with the complete professionalism we have come to expect and have never been disappointed,” Mayor Rooney said last week. The mayor added that Township Administrator Robert Shannon had also put in a lot of extra time over the length of the storm and the immediate aftermath, and gave Shannon a lot of credit for advance preparation. One firefighter, the mayor noted, had suffered financial damage when his personal car, parked outside the firehouse where he was stationed, was hit by a falling radio tower. The fire crews pumped out a large number of basements and helped remove

fallen trees in concert with Public Service Electric & Gas and Rockland Electric, Wyckoff’’s two electric utilities. Residents were affected by fallen trees and the electric lines that came down with them. “We’re in tough shape,” Township Committeeman Thomas Madigan said on Monday. “My water heater is out and I just took a cold shower. Some guy just called and said ‘Outside of the fact that I’ve got three trees down in my yard, no power, and water in the basement, we’re doing fine.’” At press time, Wyckoff officials said the township lost about 200 trees, and about 60 trees or large limbs had fallen and blocked county or municipal roads before the obstructions were removed. The winds from Hurricane Irene were measured by state sources at 44 to 55 miles per hour and the rainfall was reported at 6.5 inches, but this culminated the wettest August in recent memory and sodden ground conditions may have contributed to tree loss.
