Blood Drive set Faith Reformed Church and Community Blood Services will host the Midland Park Community Blood Drive on Monday, Oct. 24 from 5 to 8:30 p.m. at the church located at 95 Prospect Street. To schedule an appointment, call (201) 251-3703. All types of blood are needed especially types O- and O+. Any healthy individual age 17 through 75 and weighing at least 110 pounds can donate blood. Donors should eat a moderate meal before donating and must bring identification showing signature. All donors receive a complimentary cholesterol screening with every blood donation. MPPEF sponsors Military Bridge and Shop-a-Thon The Midland Park Public Education Foundation is sponsoring its Military Bridge and Shop-a-Thon on Thursday, Nov. 17 from 6 to 10 p.m. at Midland Park High School, 250 Prospect Street. The event includes card playing, prizes, refreshments, and a “hallway of shops” featuring the wares of local businesses. Tickets for Military Bridge are $15 per person and $12 for seniors (65 years old and over). Reservations are required. Shopping and prize baskets are open to non-card players. Proceeds benefit the MPPEF to support teacher-generated and district-wide grants enhancing the academic experience in Midland Park public schools. Halloween Trunk or Treat planned Faith Reformed Church will host its annual Trunk or Treat on Monday, Oct. 31 from 3 to 4 p.m. in the church parking lot at 95 Prospect Street. Children are invited to trick or treat in the parking while parents hand out Halloween candy in a safe environment. Alliance offers Parent Seminar The Midland Park Community Alliance will host a parent seminar, Bridging the Gap: What Parents Don’t Know and Teens Aren’t Telling” on Thursday, Oct. 27. The program will be held at 7:30 p.m. at in the media center/library at Midland Park High School, 250 Prospect Street. The seminar will address alcohol drug use and abuse and destructive decision making by teens. The seminar will provide parents with information about what teens are doing today and how parents can speak with their children, other adults, and the community regarding these behaviors and how to address them. Scouts host popcorn fundraiser Midland Park Cub Scouts Pack 157 and their fellow Boy Scouts will be selling popcorn outside of Sears and the A&P in Midland Park on weekends this fall. On Saturday, Oct. 22 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Scouts will be at the Church of the Nativity, 315 Prospect Street. The popcorn is sold in packages of varying sizes and the cost ranges from $6 to $22. Several varieties are offered, including butter toffee, caramel, cheddar cheese, and chocolate. Student traces athletic history while fundraising

Last winter, The Midland Park Boosters Club gave the high school gym a new paint job and replaced the old championship sports banners with new ones. While painting on that snowy afternoon, Tim Thomas asked then Booster President Marty Costello if he could purchase the banner that commemorated the 1982 B.P.S.L Boys Basketball Championship. Tim had played a supporting role on that team that starred 1st Team All County player, Hank Degenaars. When Tim told his son Jake about purchasing the banner, Jake’s first question was, “what’s going to happen to all the other banners?” At the time, Jake thought it would be a shame if the old banners
were simply boxed up and put in storage. It took some time, but with help from current Booster President John Mulligan and high school Principal Nick Capuano, Jake and his Dad are now in possession of the old banners. Jake has organized the banners and has begun searching through old yearbooks to recreate the team rosters. “It’s been fun tracking down former MPHS athletes and coaches,” Jake said. Jake is asking for a minimum donation of $50 for each banner, with all proceeds benefiting the Booster Club. Thus far, Jake and his Dad have contacted four former athletes - and have (continued on page 25)
