FLOW Follies, the annual scholarship fundraiser for graduating students at Ramapo and Indian Hills high schools, is honoring long time Follies member Linda Schwager, local attorney and former educator at a benefit dinner on Nov. 4 at the Oakland Elks Lodge, 2167 in Oakland. In addition to honoring Schwager for her years of enthusiastic support of the program, new Friends of FLOW Follies will be welcomed. The event will feature a night of food, drink, and fundraising with a DJ, performances by talented parents, prize baskets and a special auction.. FLOW Follies credits Schwager with helping make the organization what it is today through her contributions throughout the years. FLOW Follies, now in its 26th year, is the largest scholarship program in the Franklin Lakes, Oakland, Wyckoff district. “The best part of being involved in a FLOW Follies production isn’t necessarily appearing on stage; it’s about the impressive scholarship program and the opportunity for the two district high schools to work together, “ said Schwager. “It makes for a win-win situation.” Schwager has lived in Oakland with her husband and three sons since 1973. A New York school teacher and theatre lover, Schwager became a member of FLOW Follies when her sons began high school. “While I was comfortable in front of a classroom, I was not a performer,” Schwager admits. “But I attended every rehearsal and took charge of the cast party, which was held after the Saturday evening performance in the Indian Hills cafeteria. Monies for the party were collected from the Friends of FLOW Follies. We always broke

even; not a dime came out of the scholarship funds.” Ten years of overseeing the cast parties coincided with the graduation of Schwager’s three sons, Russell, Mark, and Eric. In her early forties, Schwager commuted to New York City to attend law school and has been a practicing attorney in New Jersey ever since. She is also admitted to the bars in New York, Washington, DC and the U.S. Supreme Court. Schwager continues to support FLOW Follies by placing a full-page ad on the back cover of the spring production’s ad journal. “Although my children are grown, I want to be able to help the FLOW Follies organization out in some way,” she said. She acknowledged that local businesses who take out ad space in the journal make a significant contribution to the fundraising efforts of FLOW Follies. In addition to the monies collected from Friends of FLOW Follies, ticket sales, fundraisers, attendance at events, and ad journal sales are all integral to the scholarships that are provided to 50 students at both Ramapo and Indian Hills high schools each year. Schwager also works in concert with IHHS history teacher, Ivy Urdang as the Indian Hills Mock Trial attorney coach. Trials take place at the Bergen County Courthouse. The team won the county’s Mock Trial Team Championship in 2009. For her many years of volunteer service in Oakland, Schwager has been honored by the Oakland Woman’s Club, the Oakland Chamber of Commerce, and The OaklandFranklin Lakes Rotary Club. Tickets to the dinner are $50. To purchase tickets visit www.flowfollies.org.
