Joseph P. Diaco of Franklin Lakes died Oct. 1. He was 75. He was the owner and founder of Power Electric Company in Belleville. He is survived by his wife Vera (nee Marotta), his children Stephanie Emperio, Valerie Silvestri, and Theodore Diaco, seven grandchildren, and his brothers Frank, Bob, Steve, Ted and Anthony. He was predeceased by his brothers Albert and Angelo and his sister Theresa Manasia. Arrangements were made by Vander Plaat Funeral Home in Wyckoff. Jane Klein, nee Minkema, of Midland Park died Sept. 29. She was 84. She was born in Leeuwarden, Holland. She was a member of the Christian Reformed Church of Midland Park for over 50 years, and was one of the original catering waitresses with The Market Basket where she worked for 25 years. She was a volunteer at de Snoep Winkel Gift Shop at the Christian Health Care Center in Wyckoff. She is survived by her husband Bernhard C.F. Klein of Midland Park, her children John Klein of Eaton, New York, Joan Dobutovich of Oak Ridge, and Eric Klein of Midland Park, 10 grandchildren, and her siblings Alice Spoelstra of North Haledon, and Douwe Minkema and Peter Minkema, both of the Netherlands. Arrangements were made by Vander Plaat Funeral Home in Wyckoff. Mary Kounouklos, nee Mavrikos, of Wyckoff died Sept. 30. She was 78. She was born in Chios, Halkios, Greece. She was a parishioner of Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Wyckoff. She is survived by her children Paul Kounouklos and Kristala Moshouris, two grandchildren, her brother Alex Mavrikos, and several nieces and nephews. Ralph Lettman of Brick, formerly of Wyckoff, died Oct. 3. He was 90. He was a self-employed electronics engineer. After he retired, he patrolled the Hudson River for the Coast Guard in his private plane. He was a member of the After Seventy Ski Club. He is survived by his daughters Rita Valvano and Cathy Martin, five grandchildren, 13 greatgrandchildren, and his nephew Greg Bell. Arrangements were made by Vander Plaat Funeral Home in Wyckoff. appointee to the U.S. Naval Academy. He was a graduate of the Harvard Business School. After leaving the service in 1962, he had a career of over 40 years in the financial industry. He spent 10 years as an investment banker on Wall Street and became a partner in the corporate finance department of G.H. Walker & Co. In 1972, he became one of the founding partners of what became three consecutive Venture Capital Funds, which invested in early-stage, high technology companies for over 30 years. During that time period, he served as a member of the board of directors of 14 portfolio companies. He retired in 2003. He served on the Glen Rock Board of Education and was a member of the Ridgewood Country Club. He is survived by his wife Donna Jean Reeves, his children Raun Jr., Dan, Terri, and Amy, six grandchildren, and his sister Janice. Arrangements were made by C.C. Jeanette Smetana, nee Cooper, of Midland Park, formerly of Rochelle Park, died Oct. 3. She was 95. She worked as a clerk for her family’s business, Smetana’s Sons Watchmaker in Passaic. She was a member of Eastern Star and a member of Arcola United Methodist Church in Paramus. She is survived by her children Arthur Smetana of Elmwood Park and Marilyn Brock of Bedford, New Hampshire, four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and her brother Jacob Coopers of Whiting. He served as grand marshal of the Wyckoff Memorial Day Parade in 2007. Before retiring, he was a machinist for Continental Screw Company in New Bedford, Massachusetts. He was a member of the Wyckoff Seniors. He is survived by his son Glenn and his wife Susan of Lavallette, two grandsons, and five great-grandchildren. Arrangements were made by the Olthuis Funeral Home in Midland Park. Stephen J. Suleski of Mahwah died Sept. 29. He was 87. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII. He retired from Suffern Distributors. He was an exempt member of Mahwah Fire Department Co. #2. He was a parishioner of Immaculate Heart of Mary R.C. Church in Mahwah. He is survived by his siblings Anthony Suleski of Mahwah, Wanda and brother-in-law John Giuffrida of Spring Valley, New York, sister-in-law Barbara Suleski of Suffern, New York, nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews, and a great-grandniece and a great-grandnephew. He was predeceased by his brothers Alexander, Henry, Adam, Joseph, and Stanley and his nephew Roger Suleski. Arrangements were made by Van Emburgh-Sneider-Pernice Funeral Home in Ramsey. Scouts host popcorn fundraiser Midland Park Cub Scouts Pack 157 and their fellow Boy Scouts will be selling popcorn outside of Sears and the A&P in Midland Park on weekends this fall. On Saturday, Oct. 22 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Scouts will be at the Church of the Nativity, 315 Prospect Street. The popcorn is sold in packages of varying sizes and the cost ranges from $6 to $22. Several varieties are offered, including butter toffee, caramel, cheddar cheese, and chocolate. Blessing of the Animals service set Midland Park United Methodist Church will celebrate its Tenth Annual Blessing of the Animals on Sunday, Oct. 16 at 4 p.m. All pets are welcome. DeWitt to address Lions Club John DeWitt of DeWitt and Associates will offer a presentation on adaptive technology for the blind and/or visually impaired to the Midland Park Lions on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 6:30 p.m. The group meets at the former ITT/Marlow building at 445 Godwin Avenue. Lions Clubs worldwide are dedicated to the preservation of sight and assisting those who are blind and/or visually impaired. James family walks for a cure The James family of Midland Park will participate in the Annual Light the Night Walk for Leukemia and Lymphoma Society on Oct. 15 in Morristown. This event raises money for LLS to fund research and bring hope to those who are battling blood-related cancers. The members of Team James invite the public to walk with them and/or make a donation toward LLS. When he was 18 months old, Shayne James was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia.
