Midland Park attorney Peter Jeffer is working on getting the necessary state and federal licenses to be able to sell fire arms to police officers and other members of the public. He and his partner, Jeff Casson, recently received a certificate of occupancy from the Midland Park Planning Board for the new venture, which will be run out of Jeffer’s law office across Godwin Avenue from the Midland Park Post Office. Jeffer, who has been a local attorney for 40 years, told the board that all sales would be done by appointment, and no fire arms would be on display. As required by law, alarms and a safe will be installed to store
Friends team up to offer ‘guns for the good guys’
ordered purchases for one or two days until they are picked up. No ammunition will be on the premises. The property has parking for six vehicles, two of which are designated for a residential tenant on the second floor of the building, Jeffer said. The business is incorporated as “Wortendyke Arms,” Jeffer said, but it will be a while before any sales will take place. He said getting the appropriate permits will take three months or more. “It’s more of a hobby for both of us. We’ll get a chance to meet people and sell them a few guns at a substantial savings,” Jeffer said. He added that perhaps bidding on outfitting entire police departments and selling gun collections for interested parties could be added down the road. The idea to provide “guns guns the good guys” came from a conversation the men had at the Midland Park firehouse, where they are both fire department members. “Jeff said, ‘Can you believe the markup on these guns’,” Jeffer explains. Wortendyke Arms was born to be able to provide officers some savings. He said they selected his office because it is in a business zone. Both Jeffer and Casson, who is a Ridgewood police officer and the son of Midland Park Police Chief John Casson, are avid gun collectors and sportsmen. Jeffer said he bought his first shotgun at age 15 with money he made cutting lawns and working in the local bowling alley. He now hunts in New York State and Pennsylvania, where he owns property. He has belonged to the Hungry Five and the Grandview Rod and Gun clubs.
