McMahon The Ramapo Indian Hills Board of Education has appointed Franklin Lakes resident Debra Strauss to fill the vacancy created when Wayne Peterson, a former Franklin Lakes trustee and school board president, resigned from the board in September due to his relocation to Utah. Strauss, a 20-year borough resident, was appointed to the position earlier this month and was sworn in on Nov. 21. When Peterson resigned, he was in the second year of his second three-year term. Strauss serve until April 2012, when she will have to seek election to the one-year left on Peterson’s unexpired term, which ends in April 2013. Strauss is the supervisor of special education and school psychologist for the Saddle River School District. She holds a bachelor’s degree from New York City University Queens College and a master’s degree in public school administration from Montclair State University plus a master’s in educational psychology and a professional diploma in school psychology from Kean University. She and her husband Michael have two sons, ages 18 and 14. One gradu- ated last year from Indian Hills and is now a freshman at Stevens Institute of Technology; the other is a freshman at Ramapo High School. “I applied for the position because I think I can use the knowledge and skills I have acquired in education to help the students of my community and the FLOW community in general,” Strauss said of her appointment. “These are difficult times in education, and I think that having a new board member who comes with a strong background can be an asset to the district. That is why I applied. I think Ramapo and Indian Hills high schools are very strong schools and I hope to make decisions that keep them strong and maybe even make them stronger.” The Ramapo Indian Hills Regional High School District Board of Education has nine members and they are allocated to the three towns in the district (Franklin Lakes, Oakland, and Wyckoff) based on each town’s population in the last census. Franklin Lakes has a current population of 10,590 and has two board members; Oakland has a current population of 12,754 and has three members; and Wyckoff has a current population of 16,836 and has four members on the board.
