November 23, 2011 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • Page 5 Midland Park Zack Borzone of Midland Park will finally get to participate in sports at Midland Park High School during his high school years even though he does not attend the school. Zack is home schooled and had been excluded from interscholastic play by a regulation of the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA). In a special meeting held on Nov. 9, the NJSIAA Executive Committee reversed its policy to now permit children schooled at home to participate in interscholastic sports provided that both the school and the homeschooled student comply with newlyadopted NJSIAA guidelines. According to an NJSIAA release, the guidelines are designed to ensure that homeschoolers who participate in sports meet the same NJSIAA reverses ruling eligibility requirements as other studentathletes. In May the Midland Park Board of Education appealed to the state Commissioner of Education to get NJSIAA to drop the ban. NJSIAA is the governing body for high school sports in New Jersey. It is made up of 425 accredited public, private and parochial schools in the state. “Hallelujah! We’re very happy. It’s wonderful,” said Zack’s mother, Maureen. “It’s going to be good for the students, good for the schools, good for the community. It’s a win-win for everybody,” said Zack’s father, Ray. He thanked the board of education for its support all along the way a n d s a id t h ey wou ld not h ave b e e n (continued on page 27)
