November 16, 2011 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • Page 17 The Wyckoff Volunteer Fire Department asks residents who live near a fire hydrant to “Adopt a Hydrant” and remove snow, ice, vegetation, and debris from around the hydrant, especially during the upcoming winter months. There are about 600 fire hydrants in Wyckoff. Fire hydrants are located approximately every 600 feet on most of the 88 miles of township roads. Due to the large volume of snow Wyckoff experienced last winter, township officials and the Wyckoff Volunteer Fire Department have updated the ordinance pertaining to the maintenance and upkeep of fire hydrants. As property owners or tenants, residents are responsible to ensure that the area within a five foot radius around a fire hydrant is clear of snow and ice no later than 12 hours after the snowfall ends. Residents who use a private contractor Help sought with hydrants to plow driveways and shovel sidewalks are asked to instruct the contractor to remove the snow from around a fire hydrant if one is in front of the home. This year, with the assistance of local Boy Scout Troop #89 and the Eisenhower School React Club, most fire hydrants within the township will be marked with wooden hydrant stakes. The hydrant stakes serve to mark the hydrant for first responders in the event of an emergency. Residents are asked to keep these hydrant stakes attached to their nearby hydrant. If the stake was removed in the spring, it should be reattached for the winter months. The fire department is seeking community organizations that would like to assist in placing hydrant stakes out this fall or winter. Interested organizations may contact Chief Mike Rose at (201) 891-1100 or via e-mail at chiefwfd@optonline.net.
