New book features endangered hawk family
For the last 10 years, a family of endangered red-shouldered hawks has nested in Allendale and in nearby Ramsey. To chronicle their struggles and triumphs, local nature writer Jim Wright and photographer Jerry Barrack have created “Survival: The Red-shouldered Hawks of Allendale, NJ.” The book also features photos by other local nature photographers, a locator map with the hawk’s nesting sites from 2002 to 2011, and an interview with Celery Farm Warden Emeritus Stiles Thomas, who has followed the hawks’ triumphs and tragedies for the past decade. “It’s a heart-warming local story, and the color photos are terrific,” said Wright, who has previously teamed with Barrack on several books about Allendale’s Celery
Farm Natural Area. “It’s also the story of all the folks in Allendale and nearby Ramsey who have taken these beautiful birds under their wing.” A signed, limited edition of the 72-page book, filled with photos of these hawks over the past decade, will be on sale at Rohsler’s Allendale Nursery in Allendale, Wild Birds Unlimited in Paramus, and Wild Bird Emporium in Midland Park. The hard cover version will sell for approximately $38, and the soft-cover will sell for approximately $28. The book, for sale by pre-order, should be available in early December. Other books by Wright and Barrack include “In the Presence of Nature” and “Duck Enough to Fly.” These books are also available at Rohsler’s.
