Board ratifies new agreement with supervisors
by Frank J. McMahon The Ramapo Indian Hills Board of Education has ratified a three-year agreement with the Ramapo Indian Hills Supervisors’ Association that extends from the 2010-11 through the 2012-13 school years. The agreement was recently announced by the board of education and was signed by Hank Bitten, an Indian Hills Social Studies Subject Supervisor, for the association, and Elizabeth Pierce, who is a school board member and chairperson of the school board’s Negotiating Committee. The supervisors’ association represents the 17 subject and district wide supervisors employed by the regional school district. Their salaries are paid according to the teachers’ salary guide based on their experience and degree of training and they range between $83,000 and $134,000 plus the supervisor’s stipend. Under the new agreement, the stipends the supervisors will receive will increase by two percent for 2010-11, 2.5 percent plus a $1,000 adjustment to the stipend guide for 2011-12, and 2.5 percent plus a $200 stipend increase in 2012-13. The stipends are paid according to four steps and range from $13,260 to $18,850 for 2010-11, $14,592 through $20,321 for 2011-12, and $15,156 through $21,029 for 2012-13. Some supervisors work 10 months of the year and others work 12 months of the year. According to the agreement, the director of guidance and student personnel services and the directors of athletics and student activities must be 12-month employees. Twelve-month supervisors are entitled to 20 vacation days per year plus one of the three regularly-scheduled periods when students are not in attendance and commonly known as spring, Christmas, and winter closings. Upon reasonable notice to Superintendent of Schools Lauren Schoen, and subject to her prior approval, any 12-month member may combine his or her vacation enti-
tlement in the periods of closing when students are not in attendance with the 20 day vacation entitlement. All subject supervisors, however, must be 10-month employees and, under this contract, they will continue to perform voluntarily only such services during the nonacademic year as are necessary to carry out their roles. Subject supervisors may be scheduled to work up to a total of five additional days. Those days will be scheduled between Sept. 1 and the beginning of the academic year and/or between the end of the academic year and June 30. Also, those days will be planned and scheduled by the administration, but subject supervisors may suggest activities for these planned days. In addition, 10-month district-wide supervisors must (continued on page 21)
