Temple hosts multiple programs Temple Beth Rishon’s Distinguished Speaker Series will host Dr. Robert Harris, professor of Bible at the Jewish Theological Seminary, on Sunday, Nov. 13 at 9:45 a.m. Dr. Harris will discuss “Jews and Christians Read the Bible: Diverging and Converging Interpretations.” The program cost, which includes a breakfast buffet, is $12 for temple members and $18 for non-members. The Readers’ Circle Book Club will discuss “The Brigade” by Howard Blum on Thursday, Nov. 3 at 7:30 p.m. Children of all ages and their families are invited to celebrate Shabbat at the temple’s monthly family service, Friday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. Come hear a story by the rabbi and sing songs for Shabbat. An Oneg Shabbat will follow. Attendees are asked to bring a non-perishable food item for the monthly Food Drive. This month’s beneficiary will be Loaves and Fishes Interfaith Food Pantry. Rabbi Sandy Olshansky will offer a twice monthly Torah discussion group on Saturdays at 9 a.m. Build familiarity with this sacred text and get acquainted with some of its most provocative commentators, both ancient and modern. All reading and discussion is in English. Sessions will be held on Nov. 12 and 19. Debby Landesman, preschool principal at Temple Beth Rishon, will present a series of workshops for parents of young children. The first seminar, “How to Raise a Reader,” will be offered on Tuesday, Nov. 8 at 9:15 a.m. in the temple library. The program will explore the importance of talking and reading to children, encouraging open-ended thinking
and developing a strong home library. The seminar is open to everyone with young children. Historical society offers clove tour The Wyckoff Historical Society is offering a tour of the clove in Franklin Lakes with Jim Longo on Saturday, Nov. 5. The tour will begin at noon. The clove is an area in Franklin Lakes where the Lenape Indians made their winter camp. For details, call Jean at (201) 891-9409. Knights host Wine Tasting benefit The Saint Elizabeth Council of the Knights of Columbus will host a Wine Tasting Benefit on Friday, Nov. 18 from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Brick House Restaurant, 179 Godwin Avenue in Wyckoff. The evening will feature a full buffet dinner with a sampling of wines. The wines will be available for subsequent purchase through Pane e Vino in Wyckoff, with proceeds benefiting the Knights’ charitable activities. Tickets are $50 in advance, or $60 at the door. Annual Holiday Fair set The Wyckoff Reformed Church will hold its annual Holiday Fair on Saturday, Nov. 19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will feature handmade items, consignment shopping, gifts, attic treasures, books and CDs for sale, gift baskets, lunch, homemade desserts and breads, games, and pictures with Santa. There will be a prize basket fundraiser and a special auction featuring vacation weeks, sporting events tickets, Broadway tickets, gift certificates, and more. The auction will begin at 1 p.m. The Wyckoff Reformed Church is located at 580 Wyckoff Avenue. Christmas comes to de Snoep Winkel A Christmas Boutique and Open House will be held at
the Christian Health Care Center’s de Snoep Winkel Gift Shop and Tea Room on Nov. 11 and 12. The shop is located at 700 Mountain Avenue in Wyckoff. Hours will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Nov. 11, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Nov. 12. The event will feature fall and Christmas gifts, ornaments, jewelry, candles, Delft, and an opportunity to win a Christmas gift basket. Shoppers are invited to enjoy music and hot mulled cider. Opera company presents ‘Barber of Seville’ The Wyckoff Family YMCA’s in-house opera company will present Rossini’s two-act rendition of “The Barber of Seville” on Nov. 18 at the Y, 691 Wyckoff Avenue in Wyckoff. Directed by Reegan McKenzie with musical direction by Georgianna Pappas, this one-time performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $40 each and include a pre-show reception, a reception during intermission, and preferred seating. Y hosts Holiday Marketplace The Wyckoff Family YMCA, 691 Wyckoff Avenue, Wyckoff will host its first Holiday Marketplace on Saturday, Nov. 5 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This holiday season preview will bring vendors selling a myriad of quality products including, jewelry, handbags, pottery, children’s apparel, toys, housewares, folk art, fine art, and hair and fashion accessories. There is no admission fee. A portion of all sales will benefit the Y’s community outreach programs. Friends sponsor Puppet Show The Friends of the Wyckoff Library will offer a program for children, “Lolly’s Variety Show,” on Sunday, Nov. 6 from 3 to 4 p.m. at the Wyckoff Public Library’s temporary location, 637 Wyckoff Avenue.
