(continued from Entertainment page) buffoon, but a flawed human being who is a sweetheart. Writer/actors who create a script typically design the biggest and juiciest role for themselves. If it’s a comedy, they will be sure to take the lion’s share of laugh lines. “Bridesmaids” is unusually democratic in that sense. Melissa McCarthy, for example, steals practically every scene she’s in with her gruff, brash, even uncouth Megan, a woman who could undermine all the careful wedding plans by saying or doing the wrong thing. But there is a scene in which viewers see her as a woman who never let the taunts of others stop her from forging ahead. She is happy with her life and, in fact, often seems to attack life head-on. Rita, married with three boys, documents in vivid detail the disgusting habits of her pre-teen offspring.
‘Bridesmaids’
The film has a brisk pace, courtesy of director Paul Feig. There are several beautifully crafted comic set pieces, including an onboard flight to Vegas during which Annie, high on sedatives and booze, debates with a flight attendant the pros and cons of letting her visit First Class. Another scene in a chic bridal shop turns into crisis when a recently eaten meal may have given the women food poisoning. The film has a romantic subplot involving Annie and a policeman (Chris O’Dowd) she seems to run into a lot. The balance is just right, and this story line doesn’t take attention away from the main story, but enriches it. “Bridesmaids” is very much a mainstream comedy, filled with laughs, strong characters, and a basic situation that provides many locations, conflict, and hilarious sight gags along the way. Wiig, known primarily for the eccentric characters she portrays on “Saturday Night Live,” turns in a substantial performance as Annie. When the laughs come, they’re big and long. Bruce Boxleitner. The two films are available separately or in a Limited Collector’s Edition (available on July 4). “Burning Palms” (Image Entertainment) is a study of five lives directed by Christopher Landon. A father (Dylan McDermott) and his precocious teenage daughter (Emily Meade) have a relationship his fiancée finds too close for comfort. A woman (Jamie Chung) becomes undone by her boyfriend’s kinky bedroom request. A gay couple (Peter Macdissi, Anson Mount) brings home an African child. A young boy involves his brothers in disturbing games. A woman (Zoe Saldana) confronts her attacker (Nick Stahl) with a bizarre request. The wit is sardonic and the humor macabre. The film is available on Blu-ray and DVD.
