May 25, 2011 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • Page 23 Franklin Lakes Scribe Memorial Day Parade plans under way The Borough of Franklin Lakes invites veterans, military personnel, and cadets to participate in the Memorial Day Parade scheduled for May 30. Marching in this year’s parade will be the Ramapo and Hawthorne high school bands and the Newark Pipe Band. Several borough organizations, including Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and participants from the Franklin Lakes Recreation programs, will be marching along with military trucks, fire trucks, ambulances, and an antique car. VFW Post 5702 has prepared a special memorial plaque (continued from page 6) municipal building parking lot, will follow a short service to take place at the flagpole adjacent to the Little League Baseball field at 9 a.m. Memorial Day services are scheduled for 11 a.m. at Veterans Plaza in Wortendyke. “God Bless America” will be the theme of Captain Ruebenacker’s keynote address. A Wyckoff resident and a 1990 graduate of Ramapo High School, Ruebena- Bernard Berninger while cker graduated from the serving in the U.S. Navy. University of Richmond in 1994 and received his Army commission in transportation through the ROTC program. He was on active duty in the U.S. Army from 1994-98, serving as a platoon leader and company executive officer of the 396th Transportation Company and the support operations officer–transportation, 87th Corps Support Battalion at Fort Stewart, Georgia. During that time, he deployed to Operation Bright Star in Egypt and the National Training Center at Fort Irwin, California. In 1997, he deployed to Europe as an operations officer with the 28th Transportation Battalion, 37th Transportation Command (Forward), in Taszar, Hungary in support of Operation Joint Guard. His final assignment came in 2002 when he was ordered back to active duty in support of Operation Enduring Freedom after the terror attacks against the United States. Ruebenacker served as a transportation operations officer in Saudi Arabia, prioritizing and controlling the flow of logistics to combat forces in Afghanistan. Ruebenacker has received the following honors: Army Commendation Medal (with two Oak Leaf Clusters), Joint Service Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the Airborne badge. He and his wife Kate have three children: Danny, Charlie, and Amelia. The Midland Park High School’s chorus will perform during the service at Veterans Plaza. The solemn occasion will also be marked by the display of essays related to the meaning of Memorial Day written by students in grades K-6 under the auspices of the Midland Park Fire Department. The three winners in each grade will march in the parade with the fire department. “Our kids should know what the veterans did for them,” said Fire Chief Mark Berninger, who spearheaded the contest. Chief Berninger is Grand Marshal Berninger’s son. As in previous years, the parade route will run east on Highland Avenue to Vreeland, down Vreeland to Franklin, west on Franklin to Godwin, and northwest on Godwin to Veterans Plaza. Residents are urged to line the parade route and attend the memorial services. (In case of rain, the parade will be cancelled and services will be held at the firehouse at 11 a.m.) The community at large is invited to the firehouse on Witte Drive after the services for hot dogs and soda served by the American Legion Ladies’ Auxiliary. Grand marshal listing Franklin Lakes residents who died in combat from the Civil War through the Vietnam War. The tribute will be presented to the borough on Memorial Day. To ensure the plaque is current, the Post is asking for information about borough residents who died in combat. In conjunction with the Mayor’s Wellness Program and in memory of Dr. Cheryl Welch of the Franklin Lakes Veterinary Hospital, the parade will also include a Critter Walk. Participants will march in the parade with their pets to raise funds for the Critter Fund set up by the Franklin Lakes Animal Hospital to aid in the care of community animals and the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer. Following the parade, Critter Walk participants will go to municipal field on DeKorte Drive behind borough hall and walk laps around the field. Family friends and neighbors can sponsor participants for every lap they make around the field. Kaiyapalooza set The ice hockey teams at Ramapo and Indian Hills High schools will host Kaiyapalooza, a fundraiser to benefit Kaiya Barber, on Wednesday, May 25 from 7 to 10 p.m. at Ramapo High School, George Street in Franklin Lakes. Kaiya is the daughter of Ramapo High School math teacher and hockey coach Lee Barber. Kaiya, who is six years old, has cerebral palsy. The boys of the hockey teams mount several fundraisers to benefit the high costs of Kaiya’s medical care and therapies. The event will feature a light dinner, dessert, refreshments, and prize baskets, auctions, and a cash prize. Magician Will Fern will perform a stage show and strolling magic throughout the night. Learn to download audiobooks The Franklin Lakes Public Library will offer a BeAT Open Session Class on Thursday, June 2 at 7 p.m. Participants will learn how to download audiobooks onto several devices from a home computer. Basic computer & Internet class offered The Franklin Lakes Library, 470 DeKorte Drive, will offer a Basic Computer and Internet Class, on Wednesdays and Fridays, June 1, 3, 8, and 10 from 11 a.m. to noon. This free four-part series will cover information about the mouse and keyboard, Windows desktop, Internet terminology and navigation, and tips on search techniques using Google and simple databases. Participants must be able to commit to all four classes. No experience is necessary to join this elementary class. Registration is under way at the adult reference desk. Turchin exhibits watercolors Artist Tatiana Turchin will exhibit her watercolors at The Gallery of The Presbyterian Church at Franklin Lakes during the month of May. Turchin, a member of “Les Belles Artistes,” has had her work displayed in local libraries, and at The Ridgewood Art Institute, Ringwood Manor Association, and The Stable in Ridgewood.
