McMahon At last week’s reorganization meeting, the Ramapo Indian Hills Board of Education unanimously voted to appoint Ira Belsky as the board’s president for 201112. Belsky, a Franklin Lakes representative on the board, was nominated by Oakland representative Jane Castor, who said, “He has the longest service on the board and I have had the privilege of working with him for three years (on the Education Committee). He is well versed on the issues, well prepared, and articulate.” Trustee Lynn L Budd was nominated by Oakland representative Elizabeth Pierce to be the board’s vice president. Budd was also unanimously confirmed. There were no other nominations for president or vice president. Belsky has been the board’s Education Committee chairman and has served on the Personnel/Goals/Evaluation Committee. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and Stanford Law School, he is a semiretired attorney and business executive who practiced law for 25 years and was involved in a number of businesses. He is serving his third term on the board, and he thanked the board for their confidence in him. School Board Secretary/Business Administrator Frank Ceurvels then provided the board with the formal results of the recent election, during which voters approved the $45.7 million tax levy to fund the school district’s 2011-12 budget. He advised that the budget was approved by the 4,508 voters who participated in the April election. Ceurvels then swore in newly elected board member Isabelle Lanini as the school board’s representative from Wyckoff, and Jane Castor, an Oakland representative who was reelected. The board also recognized the two student board representatives, Kate Brennan from Ramapo High School and Deanna Manniello from Indian Hills High School, for their “exemplary service in enhancing the communications between the students and the board of education.” Then Belsky introduced the new student representatives for 2011-12. Lauren Scheff will be the representative from Ramapo High School, and Gwen Mowell will be the representative from Indian Hills High School. Both Mowell and Scheff will be seniors in the fall. Joseph Amatuzzi, a retired school business administrator, was reappointed as the treasurer of school monies, and the board approved a $29,000 contract with Lerch, Vinci & Higgins, LLP to be the school district’s auditing firm. The law firm of Fogarty & Hara was appointed to serve as the board’s legal firm for 2011-12. Peter Keaney, the district’s director of facilities, was named health and safety officer and the designated person for several other environmental posts. Beverly MacKay, the director of curriculum, was appointed as affirmative action officer. In addition, John Colaneri was named the district’s physician. The school district’s existing policies and bylaws were adopted, and the board approved the curriculum for 2011-12. The board also adopted the schedule of school board meetings, with executive sessions scheduled for Mondays at 7 p.m. followed by public meetings at 8 p.m. Meetings are generally held in the conference room at the school board’s offices at Indian Hills High School in Oakland.
