Michael Owen Cassidy of Wyckoff, formerly of Kearny, died May 9. He was 57. He began his teaching career as a seventh and eighth grade social studies teacher in the Rutherford school system. He later taught at Rutherford High School. In 2001, he became assistant principal. He retired in 2010. While at Rutherford, he was the assistant varsity football coach, and assistant coach for baseball and track. He was the 1994-95 recipient of the Governor’s Teachers Recognition Award. He was a student council advisor at Union School, Academic Decathlon advisor, and ERASE - End Racism and Sexism Everywhere -- advisor. He began the Rutherford High School chapter of the statewide peer mentoring group, Heroes and Cool Kids. He was a member of the New Jersey Principal and Supervisor’s Association, a member of Gamma Theta Upsilon Honor Society and the Bergen County Audubon Society. He is survived by his wife Marilyn (nee Russo) Cassidy of Wyckoff, his daughter Marissa Cassidy of New York City, and his siblings Kathleen Holevinski of Toms River, Patrick Cassidy of Satellite Beach, Florida, and Philip Cassidy of Carteret. Arrangements were made by Vander Plaat Funeral Home in Wyckoff. Gallagher of Allendale, formerly of Saddle River, died May 8. He was 82. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. His was employed in international trade at the export firm of W.D. Blood & Co. in New York City. Later, he was a Realtor with Murphy Realty, and then Coldwell Banker in Saddle River. He is survived by his wife Liz, his children John A. Gallagher of Marietta, Georgia, Cathy Gallagher of Downingtown, Pennsylvania, and Christopher Gallagher of Alexandria, Virginia, two grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and his cousin Lorraine Gallagher Thompson, of Winston Salem, North Carolina. Patricia Ann “Patti” Gardner, nee Crocco, of Ridgewood, formerly of Nutley, died May 12. She was 45. She had been a sales representative in the electronics industry in New Jersey. She is survived by her husband Glenn Gardner, sons Eddie and John, step-children Caroline and David, her mother Patricia Crocco, step-father Joe Greco, and brothers Timothy, John, Christopher, Thomas, and Michael. Muriel Henckler of Ridgewood died May 7. She was 91. She was an artist and poet. She was a member of the Old Paramus Church in Ridgewood and its music program. She taught the illiterate and worked for the underprivileged. She is survived by her children Christine Henckler and Henry Henckler III, three grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Henry Henckler Jr. Arrangements were made by C.C. Van Emburgh Funeral Home in Ridgewood. Paul Leo Klodowski of Glen Rock died May 4. He was 83. He is survived by his wife Suzanne Schneider, his children Scott, Wayne and Glenn, four grandchildren, and his brothers Harry and Stan. Arrangements were made by C.C. Elizabeth Purdy “Betsy” Martin formerly of Saddle River, Southhold, New York, and Saint Thomas, USVI, died May 4. She was 91. She was a member of the Pelican Pointe and Jacaranda country clubs, both in Venice, Florida, and the Ridgewood Country Club in Ridgewood. She was a member of the Venice Presbyterian Church, and previously the West Side Presbyterian Church and the First Presbyterian Church, both of Ridgewood. She was a member of the Valley Hospital Auxiliary and the Ridgewood Woman’s Club. She was a volunteer at the Forum School of Waldwick, and a volunteer with the North Shore Animal League in Long Island, New York. She is survived by her children Deborah Purdy Muser of Ramsey, Melinda Purdy Bilcheck of Raleigh, North Carolina, Heide Hancock of Kingmen, Kansas, and Roy I. Martin II of Parsippany, 14 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren and her sister Gloria Ann Tompson of Albuquerque, New Mexico. She was predeceased by her husbands Arthur Russell Purdy Jr. and Roy I. Martin, and daughter Pamela Purdy Heller. Memorial donations may be made to an animal shelter of choice or to Tidewell Hospice Inc., 5955 Rand Boulevard, Sarasota, FL 34238. Andrew Gerald McBride of Glen Rock died May 7. He was 90. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII. He was employed as an engineer for Coca Cola Bottling of New York. Previously, he was a foreman with Plumber’s Union Local 24 in Newark. He was a parishioner of Saint Catharine’s RC Church in Glen Rock, where he served as a Eucharistic minister and as a member of the Building and Grounds Committee. He is survived by his wife Patricia (nee Millard), his children Andrew Gerald McBride, James Patrick McBride, Blaise Matthew McBride of Glen Rock, Mary Pat Smith, Terence Gerard McBride, Brendan Cormac McBride of Midland Park, and his siblings Kay Casserino of Scotch Plains, and Jack McBride of New York, New York, and 10 grandchildren. Meester of Mahwah, formerly of Ridgewood and Midland Park, died May 6. She was 92. She was a homemaker and seamstress and worked in retail for many years. She is the last Gold Star Mother in Mahwah, having lost her son in Vietnam. She is survived by her daughter Ruth Ann of Mahwah, her four grandchildren, and three great-grandsons. She was predeceased by her husband Jacob, and her son Everett J. Meester. Arrangements were made by Vander Plaat Funeral Home in Wyckoff. He was 75. Before retiring, he was the superintendent of the Mahwah Water and Sewer Department. He is survived by his sons Edward, Randy, Timothy, James, three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and his brothers Kenneth and Herbert. He was predeceased by his wife June. Susan Low Sauer of Wyckoff died May 5. She was 75. She was a 1957 graduate of Brown University. Before she married, she taught first grade in Fair Lawn. After the death of her husband, she took over his business, A.H. Sauer & Associates. She was a member of Barnert Temple in Franklin Lakes. She is survived by her children Richard, Elizabeth Sauer, Stephanie Sauer Pasternak, and Jennifer Low Sauer, five grandchildren, and her siblings Brenda Mann, and Theodore Low. She was predeceased by her husband Alvin H. Sauer. Arrangements were made by Louis Suburban Chapel in Fair Lawn. Clazina Vander Valk of Wyckoff, formerly of Lincoln Park, died May 10. She was 76. A graduate of William Paterson College, she was employed as a teacher for 35 years, 24 of them at the Netherlands Reformed Christian School in Pompton Plains. She was a member of the Netherlands Reformed Church Teachers’ Association, and a member of the Netherlands Reformed Church and its Dorcas Circle. She is survived by her brothers Roland of Sarasota, Florida, and Peter of Odgensburg, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother Henry Vander Valk.
