Wyckoff police have arrested two young males, one of whom is a juvenile, after a police officer reportedly spotted them preparing to smoke marijuana in the Maple Lake area.
Two arrested at Maple Lake for drug offenses
Sergeant Michael Ragucci observed a suspicious vehicle parked on Maple Drive adjacent to the Maple Lake property at 4:15 p.m. on May 5. He walked into the woods and reportedly detected two individuals in the process of pushing marijuana into a hollowed-out cigar. The youths detected him as he approached, and started to run. Sergeant Ragucci apprehended an 18-year-old Midland Park resident. A 15-year-old Midland Park boy escaped, but his identity was later determined. The 18-year-old was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of narcotics paraphernalia, and attempting to destroy evidence of a crime. He was released on his own recognizance. The 15-year-old was released to a parent and complaints were filed with the Bergen County Juvenile Court. On May 9, Detective Joseph Soto responded to Wal-

green’s at 655 Wyckoff Avenue to investigate credit card fraud. The investigation revealed that two women had purchased eight American Express gift cards valued at $300 each. The credit cards they used to make the purchases were fraudulent. The investigation to identify the women is in progress. On May 10, a resident of Russell Avenue reported a burglary at his home. The homeowner stated that the house had been vacant for about an hour in the afternoon. When he returned home, he discovered the burglary. The investigation did not determine the point of entry into the house, which may have occurred through an unlocked door. Handguns, rifles, and jewelry were reported stolen. Lieutenant David Murphy, Detective Michael Musto, and Patrolman Kevin Pinches investigated this incident.

(continued from page 5) Once Realty Appraisals completes its report, it will notify residents by mail of the new value and offer to review the assessment at an informal hearing. At that time the property owner may ask questions and even challenge the findings by pointing out special circumstances the assessor may not have considered. If not satisfied with the final figure, property owners will have until May 1, 2012 to file a formal appeal with the Bergen County Tax Board. Increased values due to the revaluation do not automatically result in higher property taxes. Following the revaluation, a new, presumably lower tax rate is struck, and this lower rate is applied to the new assessed value to determine the new taxes on each property. Traditionally after a revaluation, taxes on one third of the properties stay unchanged, while one third go up and one third decrease. The new values as of Oct. 1, 2011 will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2012. At present, the assessed value of an average borough property is $300,000.
