Wyckoff May 11, 2011 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • Page 9 Ramapo High School senior Ashley Garbaccio has been received the Gold Award, Girl Scouting’s highest honor. In order to receive this award, a Girl Scout must complete a leadership project of at least 100 hours that addresses a community need. For her Gold Award project, Garbaccio created a 14-page coloring book, “Wonders of Wyckoff,” which features the history of the township. Garbaccio researched, Ashley Garbaccio achieves Girl Scout Gold Award designed, and illustrated the book, which features various landmarks and historical sites in the township and brief facts about their significance. “Wonders of Wyckoff” will be distributed to local children by the schools, library, civic organizations, and local merchants. “My coloring book puts a unique spin on educating young children about what can be boring historical facts,” said Garbaccio, a member of Troop 166. “I hope to achieve an increased awareness, appreciation, and knowledge of our long history among the children of Wyckoff.” The Girl Scout Gold Award is achieved by only 5.4 percent of eligible Girl Scouts nationwide, according to the Girl Scouts of the USA website. In northern New Jersey, about 12 percent of eligible girls complete the award. Garbaccio’s local advisor for the project was Wyckoff Township Committeeman Brian Scanlan, who arranged for the complimentary printing of 5,000 copies through the Sheridan Press, a medical and scientific journal printer in Hanover, Pennsylvania. “Mr. Scanlan always pushed me to higher goals, and, amazingly, I was blessed with more than I ever imagined,” Garbaccio said. She also received support from local graphic designer Linda Vreeland, who helped prepare the material for printing, and other members of the Wyckoff Historical Society, who reviewed her work. Garbaccio became active in Girl Scouts in kindergarten at Lincoln School. “Girl Scouts has helped me with per- sonal goals and time management,” she explained. “My experiences have empowered me to become a better leader, along with understanding diversity.” In addition to Girl Scouting, Garbaccio was captain of the Ramapo tennis team and played first doubles. The team won its third straight sectional championship and finished the year as the top ranked team. She is a member of the National Honor Society, World Language National Honor Society, co-president of the Interact Club, and a member of the Wind Ensemble. She will attend George Washington University in Washington, D.C. in the fall.
