Ordinance would set fees for movie crews in township
by John Koster On May 17, the Wyckoff Township Committee will hear and probably adopt an ordinance that would establish the fee scale and permitted hours and days of filming for feature films, documentaries, TV commercials, and educational films to be made within the borders of the township. The basic filming permit would be $250, or, if the applicant expresses the need for a waiver for expedited filming on a rush schedule, $300. This covers only the application to the Wyckoff Township Clerk. The fees for the filming are graduated based on the type of film to be made and the film company’s anticipated revenue and/or ability to pay. The ordinance would set a $1,500 per day fee for those making feature films or television series, with fees of only $25 per day for recognized non-profit filming. The hours of filming would be set at 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., with permission for night scenes stipulated in the licensing applications. The film company would have to be insured and would have to post a $2,000 bond for the cleanup after filming. One or more off-duty Wyckoff police officers would have to be hired for traffic control and other safety precautions at the site of the filming. The filming sessions would be limited to three days in a row, or no more than six days in a calendar year at any given location. Where the owner of the site and the applicant for the permit are not the same person, both would be liable for any violations of the stipulated conditions, with fines of up to $2,000 a day and a theoretical jail term of 90 days for repeat violations. Wyckoff officials noted that Franklin Lakes and Allendale, both neighboring communities, have served as filming venues for a number of TV shows and commercials and the township committee wanted to have an ordinance on the books. In recent years, various local communities have been used as venues for scenes for television shows and major motion pictures, TV commercials, student-made films, and documentaries.
Correction: School Board election results
The article regarding the Wyckoff Board of Education election that ran in the May 4 edition of Villadom TIMES included the statement that newcomer Karl Drehwing had been elected to a three-year term on the school board. That information is incorrect. Villadom TIMES regrets the error and any inconvenience it may have caused.
Joey Grbic (left) recently completed his community service project. While visiting the Oasis Center for Women and Children in Paterson, he saw firsthand how volunteering his time went a long way towards helping others in need. Joey and his friend, Jonathon Park (pictured at right), who worked together on the project, are both third graders from Lincoln School and collected over 40 food bags from generous Wyckoff residents.
