‘Curtains’ comes to Paper Mill
(continued from Entertainment page) and Newman expressing their affection for each other in song and dance. She is light on her feet and looks lovely gently swirling around the stage, while Newman does his best to keep up. The best performance by far is Ed Dixon’s acerbic director. Looking like Monty Woolley in “The Man Who Came to Dinner” and playing the role in similarly cutting fashion, his Christopher Belling is the kind of man who can devastate people, most of whom he regards as lesser mortals, with rapier verbal precision. He also has some terrific exit lines. He provided easily the biggest laughs at the opening night performance. Director Mark S. Hoebee has staged “Curtains,” produced in association with Theatre under the Stars of Houston, Texas, with brisk pacing and a particular flair for the production numbers. “Show People,” which expresses the same sentiments of Irving Berlin’s “There’s No Business Like Show Business,” is an anthem to all the folk who dwell in the uneasy world of the theater. Most of the cast is onstage for this number, as the orchestra swells and a huge, illuminated “Show People” marquee descends. It’s very impressive. Hoebee is right on the money with “What Kind of Man,” a number that excoriates critics and their vicious words. Carmen, Oscar, Aaron, and Georgia pour out their venom toward those they regard as the enemy. The bitter tone comically changes when a single favorable review is found among the many bad ones. They immediately shift gears into accolades of praise and affection for those who judge their work. Joann M. Henter’s choreography and Robert Andrew Kovach’s sets are impressive and definitely Broadway caliber. Many recent Broadway shows have downplayed choreography, so it was great to see dancers doing their stuff for an appreciative audience. Theater fans will pick up subtle and not-so-subtle references to “Oklahoma,” “Gypsy,” “Kiss Me Kate,” “Follies,” and others. “Curtains” is a light, tuneful show that keeps the music and dance at the forefront while reminding the audience every now and then that there is an underlying mystery afoot. “Curtains” will run through May 22 and will play the following performance schedule: Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m., Thursdays at 1:30 and 7:30 p.m., Fridays at 8 p.m., Saturdays at 1:30 and 8 p.m., and Sundays at 1:30 and 7 p.m. Single tickets are $25 to $94 and may be purchased by calling (973) 376-4343, at the Paper Mill box office on Brookside Drive in Millburn, or online at www.papermill. org.
