Midland Park Midland Park’s Superintendent of Schools Dr. Marie Cirasella is expected to be back to work Thursday, May 5 after a three-month medical leave. She had suffered an adverse reaction to medication, according to school officials. Board Business Administrator/Board Secretary Stacy Garvey was officially appointed acting superintendent for 90 days on March 1. The time limit is set by the state because Garvey does not hold state certification as superintendent. Last week, the board approved addi- May 4, 2011 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • Page 7 Superintendent due back tional compensation for Garvey retroactive to Feb. 7 “for performing extra duties in the absence of the superintendent.” The $2,500 per month stipend will be in effect until the superintendent returns from the medical leave. Cirasella, who replaced Superintendent William Heebink on July 1, 2010, had a sick leave bank of 50 days included as part of her contract with the district. Additionally, school employees receive 15 sick days a year. Dr. Heebink retired following cancer surgery after two years in the district. Midland Park’s school budget was approved by an almost 2-1 margin last week, with only 15 percent of registered voters turning out at the polls. The $17,604,887 school tax levy received 433 “yes” votes to 268 negative tallies. In all 701 of the borough’s 4,762 registered voters cast ballots, a substantially lower number School budget gets voters’ nod than normal for a school election in town. Last year, 28 percent voted, and 20 percent cast ballots in 2009. The three incumbent trustees running for re-election – Maryalice Thomas, Ray Moraski and James Canellas received 489, 479 and 450 votes, respectively.
