Two new athletic directors gain school board’s approval
by Frank J. McMahon The Ramapo Indian Hills Board of Education recently approved the appointment of new athletic and student activities directors at both high schools in the regional district. Ron Anello was appointed to that post at Ramapo High School, and Lorenzo Baratta was appointed to that position at Indian Hills High School. Both men were appointed to serve for the period of July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2012. Superintendent Lauren Schoen announced her recommendations for the appointments. She said 104 applications were received and 15 candidates were interviewed by a committee of principals, directors of student personnel, coaches, members of the supervisors’ and teachers’ associations, and the interim athletic and student activities director at Ramapo High. The field of applicants was reduced to eight and then to two who were interviewed by Schoen and Bev MacKay, the district’s director of curriculum. The two finalists met with the school board’s Personnel Committee. “Based on all of that and the many positive comments that we received about them during their reference checks, I am recommending these two candidates tonight,” Schoen told the school board and the audience at the board’s last public meeting. The new directors were approved, with Wyckoff trustee Thomas Bunting abstaining from the vote and trustee Sadie Quinlan voting against the appointments. Bunting and Quinlan emphasized that they liked both candidates, but Bunting said he thought more candidates with athletic director’s experience should have been considered for such high profile positions. Quinlan said she was strongly opposed to the specific schools to which the candidates were assigned. She said she would have preferred Baratta at Ramapo and Anello at Indian Hills. Quinlan indicated that she had discussed her reasons with Schoen and her peers on the board in executive session, but preferred not to elaborate in public. Anello will receive a salary of $124,681. He is a graduate of Trenton State College with a bachelor’s degree in health, physical education, and driver education. He is also a graduate of Jersey City State College with a master’s degree in administration and supervision.

I am eager to begin, and become part of a school system that maintains, both a high level of academic and athletic achievement,” Anello said. Anello will replace Mike Miello, who has been serving on a per diem basis since Todd Meyer, the previous full time athletic director was suspended by Schoen in November 2010 pending an investigation into allegations (continued on page 6)
