Midland Park public school students will attend 180 days of classes during the current school year instead of the traditional 183 days previously scheduled. While state law requires a school year to be at least 180 days, Midland Park has had the 183-day requirement for more than two decades. The board of education last week revised its calendar to reduce the required attendance for all students. The

move was the result of school closings which exceeded the number anticipated when the 2010-11 school calendar was adopted a year ago. No days will be taken from the annual spring break, one of the options originally contemplated. The revised calendar provides that the last day for seniors will be June 20, the Monday after graduation. Seniors will not be receiving their actual diplomas during traditional commencement ceremonies on Friday, June 17, according
Watoto Children’s Choir to perform
Watoto Children’s Choir from Uganda will present its “Concert of Hope” at Faith Reformed Church, 95 Prospect Street in Midland Park, on Tuesday, April 5 at 7 p.m. Watoto Children’s Choirs have toured throughout the world, spreading a message of hope for Africa’s orphaned and vulnerable children. The choir presents Watoto’s vision and mission through music and dance, with an energetic fusion of contemporary gospel and traditional African rhythms. Concerts of Hope demonstrate the life-changing love of God experienced by the children of Watoto. The choir is on a mission to raise the next generation of Ugandan leaders to become responsible and productive citizens. Watoto is currently caring for 2,000 parentless children. Through music and dance, these children share Watoto’s vision: Rescue a Child, Raise a Leader, Rebuild a Nation. A free-will offering will be taken. to Acting Superintendent of Schools Stacy Garvey. State Department of Education regulations do not permit a district to issue diplomas prior to the 180th day, Garvey said. Additionally, Saturday, June 11 will be an exam day for seniors. Two sessions will be offered on that day: 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. The last day of school for students in Kindergarten through grade 6 will be Monday, June 20. Dismissal will be at 12:30 p.m., the earliest state requirements allow for the day to count as a full school day. The last day for students in grades 7-11will be Wednesday, June 22, with a 12:30 p.m. dismissal. The original calendar set June 22 as the last day for all students. Teachers will tentatively have to report to school a day longer than the students, according to the revised calendar. The employment contract with the Midland Park Education Association sets the student contact days at 183, plus three additional staff development days. The last day for K-6 teachers tentatively will be Tuesday, June 21, and for 7-12 teachers, Thursday, June 23. Garvey said a decision on the last day for teachers will be made once Superintendent of Schools Dr. Marie Cirasella is back on the job. She has been on a medical leave of absence since last month. The district closed three full days for snow this winter. To further complicate matters, the high school building was closed an additional two days in November, 2010 due to a water main break. The elementary schools remained open on those two days. Only two emergency closing days had been built into the calendar.
