Rubin will offer classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The Tuesday workshop will begin April 12; the Thursday workshop will begin April 14. Classes will meet from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. for eight weeks. Tuition is $96. Rubin, a retired award-winning journalist, provides students with a 19-page syllabus to guide them as they write at home and share their stories with the writing community. Marcia Clark to speak at luncheon Marcia Clark, the head prosecutor in the 1994 murder trial of football player O.J. Simpson and author of “Without a Doubt,” will be the featured speaker at the Friends of the Franklin Lakes Library annual luncheon. This event will be held Thursday, April 21 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Indian Trail Club. Clark was a successful homicide prosecutor in Los Angeles before she was appointed to head the prosecution of Simpson. She was a strong advocate of victims’ rights and won many of her cases because of her effectiveness in the courtroom. Lawyers for the defense praised her for her ethical principles, and her tenacity, preparation, and competence in the courtroom. Clark’s second book, “Guilt by Association,” her fiction debut, is due to be released on April 20. Tickets for the luncheon are $60 for Friends of the Library members, $75 for patrons of the library, and $100 for platinum friends of the library. Children’s author to appear Children’s author and illustrator Douglas Florian will visit the Franklin Lakes Public Library on Wednesday, April 13 at 4:30 p.m. Florian’s titles include “Dinothesaurus,” “Poetrees,” “Bing Bang Boing,” “Laugh-eteria” and “Mammalabilia.” The Friends of the Franklin Lakes Library sponsored this program in honor of National Library Week and Children’s Poetry Month at the Franklin Lakes Library. A representative of Borst Landscaping will offer ideas to create a backyard retreat and how to deal with the intricacies of front yard design. A question and answer session will follow. Opera singers perform concert The Allegro Singers will perform a gala opera concert, “Sound of Spring,” at the Franklin Lakes Library on Sunday, March 27 at 3 p.m. All are welcome to attend. The library is located 470 DeKorte Drive. Paws for Reading returns The Paws for Reading program will return to the Franklin Lakes Public Library, 470 DeKorte Drive, this spring. Beginning and accomplished readers in grades one through six are invited to make friends with well-behaved certified therapy dogs while polishing their reading and public speaking skills. Children may sign up to read to one of these dogs for a 10-minute period. Paws for Reading will take place on Mondays, April 4 and 25, and May 9 and 23. Bryan’s Run set The Fifth Annual Bryan’s Run for brain tumor awareness will be held March 26 at the Academy of the Most Blessed Sacrament, 782 Franklin Lake Road in Franklin Lakes. The 5K/1K event benefits Bryan’s Dream Foundation, an all-volunteer organization establisehd in memory of Bryan Opremcak, who died in 2006 at age 12. Bryan had Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM), one of the most aggressive kinds of brain tumors. The foundation provides direct financial assistance to many families in the tri-state area, and supports efforts in over 25 area hospitals. Bryan’s Dream Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization dedicated to the support of children diagnosed with brain tumors and their families. Participants may register at www.bryansdream.org. Youth dodge ball offered The Franklin Lakes Recreation Department will offer dodge ball to students in grades three through eight this spring at Elite Training Academy. The 10-week program will be held on Wednesdays, April 6 through June 8. Children in grades three through five will meet from 4 to 5 p.m. and children in grades six through eight will gather from 3 to 4 p.m. The cost of the program is $75. First ladies’ lives examined Emmy Award-winning actress Elaine Bromka will offer a gallery of intimate portraits of three remarkable, radically different first ladies in “Lady Bird, Pat, and Betty: Tea for Three” at the Franklin Lakes Library on March 23 at 7 p.m. Bromka, who has been performing for 30 years in film, television, Broadway, and off-Broadway productions, provides a fascinating evening laced with insight, emotion, and humor.
