In an extraordinary event that will showcase a rising generation of dancers, exhibit $1 million in jewelry, and provide scholarships that will forever change lives in the developing world, Wyckoff School of Dance and Devon Fine Jewelry are teaming up to present “Gems of the Dance: Uniting the Arts for a Better World” on Saturday, April 2. The event will be held from 6:30 to 10 p.m. at the Brick House, 179 Godwin Avenue in Wyckoff. The evening will include a special dance performance celebrating the treasures of the gem world, and an exhibit of design masterpieces and treasures from Devon’s collections. Helene Alexopoulos Warrick, a principal dancer for the New York City Ballet for 24 years, will offer a discussion of the joy and passion of the dance. Like many ballerinas, Alexopoulos believes

dance was a great gift in her life. Always respected for her great intelligence and for her dancing abilities, Alexopoulos will speak about the ways that the discipline and focus required to make a good dancer also help give people superb life skills and an excellent foundation for future success. The event will also include a discussion of Madagascar, the people who mine gems there, and samples of those gems. Attendees will have an opportunity to purchase some gems from Madagascar. There will be an opportunity for attendees to win unique and extraordinary items such as ballet shoes autographed by some of the world’s leading dancers. “This will be a unique and extraordinary cultural event for the people of Wyckoff,” said Nancy Schuring, founder (continued on page 19)

Seniors host Fashion Show The Indian Hills High School Class of 2011 will present its Senior Fashion Show on Friday, March 25 at 6 p.m. at the high school, 97 Yawpo Avenue in Oakland. The event will include light fare before the show, prize baskets, a cash prize, and a program of the latest fashions. Tickets are $25 ($10 for students) and may be purchased at the door. IronMatt scholarship applications available The Matthew Larson Foundation for Pediatric Brain Tumors is now accepting scholarship applications. This separately funded and distinct scholarship fund will award four $500 scholarships that will be awarded to two Indian Hills High School seniors and two Ramapo High School seniors. The scholarships will be presented upon graduation in memory of young Matthew Larson, a RIH district student who attended Woodside Avenue Elementary School in Franklin Lakes. The scholarships will be awarded through the Ramapo and Indian Hills high schools guidance departments to the four students chosen who best reflect the characteristics that defined Larson’s short life. High school seniors who have displayed
courage, a strong mind, a big heart, a positive attitude, and a never give up personality may pick up an application from their guidance counselor or visit www.ironmatt. org. The Matthew Larson Foundation for Pediatric Brain Tumors (also known as IronMatt) is a public 501(c)(3) foundation organized for charitable purposes and is classified for tax purposes as a tax exempt public foundation. IronMatt.org was created by the family and friends of seven year old Matthew James Larson, who lost a fiveyear battle with brain and spinal tumors in April 2007. NFL Pros play basketball for charity Interact, the community service club at Ramapo High School is sponsoring a basketball tournament fundraiser on March 26 at 7 p.m. at the high school, 331 George Street in Franklin Lakes. Run in conjunction with the Dreams for Kids Foundation, NFL pros will step out of their football shoes to play basketball. Teams playing the pros will be students, faculty, and teams from the communities. There will be special VIP passes sold for $25 for adults and $15 for kids for a private “meet and greet” session with the athletes before the game. There will also be a $10,000 half court shot opportunity, and an opportunity to win sports memorabilia conducted by Steiner Sports. Food will be sold in the cafeteria.
