Page 24 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • March 16, 2011 (continued from Restaurant page) seaside tourist resort into the ultimate nightmare. This is one of most outlandish and audacious movies ever made. The oceanic beast has problem-solving intelligence, attacks without mercy or warning, and can walk on land. Not surprisingly, the film was released under the banner, “Roger Corman Presents.” Corman was the king of low-budget exploitation flicks in the 1950s and 1960s, and “Sharktopus” is exactly the kind of movie that made his name and fortune. He makes a cameo appearance in a film that revels in its cheesiness. Shown originally on the SyFy Channel, the movie delivers lots of action, but don’t expect a story that makes much sense. With a bag of popcorn, it’s fine. “Spooner” (Maya Entertainment) is a romantic comedy starring Matthew Lillard as Herman Spooner, a used car salesman who still lives with his parents (Kate Burton, Christopher MacDonald). Spooner is set in his unfulfilling routine, but turning 30 marks a hard deadline set by his mom and dad to get a place of his own. Meanwhile, Spooner’s boss is putting on the pressure to make some sales or risk being fired. Headed for one of the worst days of his life, Spooner meets the girl of his dreams, Rose (Nora Zehetner). Forgoing all other priorities, Spooner is now working on winning her heart, but on their perfect date, she breaks the news that she is about to leave for the Philippines. There have been child-men in movies before, perhaps FINLEY FINLEY DVDs the most appealing being Dudley Moore’s “Arthur,” but there is little new in “Spooner,” which seems more like a sitcom with one-liners substituting for character development. Lillard does not elicit empathy. His Spooner never really rings true, and situations are mere setups for gags, most of which are less than rollicking. There are no extras on this DVD. “Peanuts Double Feature” (Paramount Home Entertainment) contains the big-screen debut of Charlie Brown and the rest of the Peanuts cast in “A Boy Named Charlie Brown” (1969). Charlie is gearing up for his first pitch of the baseball season only to stop midway because the pitcher’s mound is filled with dandelions. Linus loses and retrieves his security blanket, Snoopy shows his dancing ability and plays shortstop, and Lucy tricks Charlie into kicking the football, pulling it away at the last second so poor Charlie falls flat on his back. The movie contains a jazz score by Vince Guaraldi and songs by Rod McKuen. In “Snoopy, Come Home” (1972), the exploits of Charlie, Snoopy, Linus, Lucy, and the others come to life in a story about a certain beagle who goes missing. Responding to a letter from his original owner, Lila, Snoopy visits her in the hospital while Charlie Brown and his pals search for him. Snoopy feels he must say goodbye to his friends and go live with Lila. In the hospital, he encounters several “No Dogs Allowed” signs and an annoying little girl who wants to keep him. Both films play like extended versions of the half-hour TV special, but with more of a plot thread and plenty of moments that illustrate the quirkiness of the assorted characters.
