March 16, 2011 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • Page 17 On Saint Patrick’s Day, Thursday, March 17, the Wyckoff Police Department will have extra officers on roving DWI patrols. Officers will be looking for intoxicated drivers. For many Americans, Saint Patrick’s Day has become a popular night out with family and friends. Unfortunately, due to the large numbers of drivers who tend to drink and drive their vehicles that evening, the night out has become very dangerous, police sources said. Statistics have shown that almost 40 percent of drivers involved in serious or fatal crashes on Saint Patrick’s Day have a blood alcohol content that exceeds the legal limit. “Why are we publicizing ahead of time that we have extra patrols out looking for drunk drivers? The goal is to encourage motorists to not drink and drive,” stated Wyckoff Police Chief Benjamin Fox. “If by being aware that we have extra patrols out there discourages drunk drivers from being on the road, that’s a good thing. It’s not about the arrest numbers; it’s about keeping the roadways safe. There is a constant need to provide education to people Police plan DWI patrols The Youth Group of Temple Beth Rishon in Wyckoff is preparing for Passover by planting parsley seeds in their homemade planters. In the spring, they will be helping T’Green Olam, Temple Beth Rishon’s Environmental Committee, turn an unused grassy area at the temple into a garden so next Passover they will be able to harvest their own vegetables and herbs. Planting ahead about the dangers of drunk driving. If by me talking about this scares someone into thinking that perhaps they should not drive drunk for fear of getting caught….excellent! I’ve done my job and the roads are a little safer. It’s not worth the risk. You can kill or seriously injure yourself or someone else, and the financial costs after something happens can be staggering. There is nothing wrong with having fun and celebrating with family and friends, just be smart when it comes time to drive home.” Chief Fox recommends the following steps to a safe and enjoyable Saint Patrick’s Day celebration: • Plan a way home BEFORE the festivities begin. • Before drinking, designate a sober driver and give that person the car keys. • If you know you have had too much to drink, call a family member or friend for a ride. • If you see a drunk driver on the road, contact the local police or call 911. • If you see an obvious drunk driver at a party or a bar, take some steps to assure that person doesn’t drive.
